Hey guys i just put in the diablochip on my 00 x Sport (4.0L SOHC) Man it kicks butt lol! Anyway here's the deal. I like to test my products so i floored it today etc. THe problem/concern is this. Shortly after i had my little sports car "Rage" i parked it at my friends. We get out and smell this funky odor. Come back out and it's still smells. Examining under the hood shows nothing wrong. We look under the car. Looks like it may be the cat converters. That is my guess. Maybe muffler but i doubt it (getting new muffler/exhaust later in week/soon anyway) It is sorta like a burning smell and it's coming from under the car i'm pretty sure of it. Only other performance mod so far in my X is the KMM intake. I thought maybe with the intake and chip together w/ the massive air the converters can't take that much?Does that sound stupid lol. Also i installed the diablo chip with about 1/3 or 1/4 tank of premium gas left. I only use premium gas on my X now. I thought maybe it needs a full fillup with the readjustment of the air/fuel mixture? Or maybe it's a bad tank of gas i don't know... Any suggestions/comment/feedback is much appreciated. If anyone knows a place that sells high flow/performance cat converters for a good price let me know. To bad ford uses 2 :( Lastly, the diablo chip is legal right? I should pass inspections with my setup no problem right? I'm in NY....Thanks, again.

Maybe some trash caught up near your exhuast somewhere? My friend caught a big piece of plastic on the bottom of his muffler and 2 years later that sucker is still melted on there and still stinks.

i agree..... the smell of burning mud really annoys people but i like the way it smells..... or the smell of burning water when i drive around in the rain......i dont think that the kkm or the chip did anything wierd to the exhuast.... what was the smell, if it didnt smell like rotten eggs, it probably isnt the cats

heh rotten eggs? Umm all i know was that it smelled like something was burned/burning and it was nasty. Any other way to tell? I was gonna replace my stock cats with highflow ones anyway but would like to wait a bit. This was all at night though so maybe something did get stuck i don't know. Will have to look again in daylight.

the telltale sign of bad catalytic converters that have gone south by being plugged up is a rotten egg or sulfer like smell...... the stock explorer cats are pretty high flow already, and it is also illegal to change the cats if you have below a certain # of miles and/or can prove the old ones were bad

right, well im on 49k mile already. Once i hit 50k it will be legal. Sulfur eh might of smelled like that; dam and i thought this computer chip was meant for racing. I still think it might be the chip since it readjusted the mixture and **** which ****ed up the cats? Don't think anyone else has had this problem with the chip though. I really hope its not the cats but i guess when i have the guy do my muffler/dual exhaust soon he can check the cats... I'm gonna have to do some high speed driving again to see if the smell comes back. Right now it doesn't smell but i think that's because i drove home at normal speeds etc...with no fast acceleration.

did you remember to reset your computer?

Used to get that smell all the time when I was in highschool and would rag-out the old man's truck. That nasty burning smell is your brake pads. I actually got them to smoke once or twice. High speed stopping is hell on Explorer brakes, but they are better than they used to be.

ha it's not the brakes! I got new ones, factory brakes on explorer are bad enough lol. Reset the computer? I just cleaned like it said and popped it in. The battery was off though. How do you reset it?

Well then, cats would be my next thing to rule out. You can't "tune up your EX". All engine management is done by the computer. Your chip changes the way the computer works by advancing the timing, etc. Most of the chips require the use of premium fuel. You will get severe pinging with reg.

i just noticed something, but sounds very stupid could this be it. I was looking at the instructions and noticed that i didn't put the sticker that they show to cover the the chip!!?!?! I doubt that would cause it though heh...i guess i should put it on anyway to protect it.

The chip shouldn't have caused the smell. I have had my chip in for about 3 years now and get on my Explorer quite a bit and have never had any unusual smells.

It has been said that the Explorer cats are already pretty free flowing. If it turns out your cats are bad, your Ford warranty on them should be 8 years / 80 K miles. At $800 for new cats, I would let Ford do them on their dime.
