Power Lock not working right?

Hello,

I have a 98 Explorer Limited.

The front driver side door's power lock does not work correctly.

When I hit the lock and unlock, it makes a wierd sound like a grinding/buzzing noise, but the lock doesn't move. If I try to use the key to lock/unlock, that does not work, the key won't even turn. I can push the lock down easy enough, but the only way to get it back up is to open the door from the inside, it automatically unlocks the door when I pull on the inside handle.

I've been told I need a new power lock motor??? But I'm wondering if it could be something else, because I can hear the thing making all sorts of noise.


...and since I'm on the topic, my rear driver side door lock doesn't work either. It hasn't worked since I got the car. When I press the lock or unlock button I can see the latch move, but it doesn't move far enough in either direction. I have to pull the latch up further, or push it down further. Any idea's here?

take your door panels off and ensure that all the linkages are moving freely. once the door panel is off you can just spray some penetrating fluild on the linkage connections and operate through several lock / unlock cycles by hand.

that should def. take care of the rear door issue. the front door issue may require some parts to rectify considering you are already hearing some buzzing and grinding. since ensuring the linkage is operating freely only costs you time it is a good place to start. plus, you'll want to make sure the linkage works properly before swapping out the motor if need be...

I'm sorry to say, but you are probably going to need a new power lock. Mine did the same thing and I took it out to see if I could fix it. The motor was just bad. I still need to find one to replace it.

Check the linkage first. Even if its the power lock actuater it should not stop the key from turning. It being that way and over time could have cause the the motor to go.
