2003 Sport Trac XLT
Just bought a great 2003 Sport Trac and the rear view mirrors do not function. I've done quite a bit of research and read a number of different threads. Based on that - I checked the #5 fuse and that didn't resolve it. After that I replaced the switch in the driver side door and that didn't resolve it.

I basically hear nothing when I attempt to move either rear view mirror with the driver door mounted switch - it sure seems to me that it is unlikely that both motors have failed and there must be a short in the wiring harness.

What should my next step be to troubleshoot this issue?

Thanks!

I haven't experienced this, but others have had problems with broken wires in the large rubber sleeve going into the front of the door. All switches and electrical components in the door are powered by wires in that bundle.

That is precisely what is was. At first, it was a little intimidating because of the large bundle of wires and absolutely no slack.

But I identified the wires coming off of the driver door mounted rearview mirror control button and then looked for those specific colors in the large bundle in the rubber boot.

I then saw clear as day a cable that was severed. Wound the two ends together and used electrical tape and boom - the rear view mirrors worked like a charm.

I bought this 2003 sport track with 235K miles on it for $4000. It is super clean, no accidents, shifts and drives beautifully.

I've had it for two weeks and I figure if I make it to a month without it blowing up, I've scored a nice vehicle!

That was exactly my issue as well causing my keyless entry pad to stop working. It's a fairly common problem and just like you said a little daunting at first to fix, but extremely easy in the end. Glad you got it figured out and good luck with the truck! These things are great!

Man, I like this vehicle. I've owned an F150 before but don't need the full bed. I wanted 4 doors, 4WD and a bed and this baby has all of those!

I just swapped out the driver side leather seat bottom and this interior looks practically brand new. I'm loving it and it beats paying 10-15k for a used Tacoma or Tundra.

I live in Colorado Springs and we have a couple of wranglers and a Cherokee. I'm starting to think that the Sport Trac v6 is as solid as the Jeep 4L straight six engine.

Mine has been extremely reliable and the only downside to them is the weaker timing chain guide design, but that usually lasts 150-200k so if you replace it once, then you have a solid 300k+ mile vehicle if maintained.

I'm guessing I know the answer to this but is there any way to easily determine if the timing chain has been replaced?

Not that I know of other than pulling it and looking.

I know some shops label that kind of work in the engine compartment. It would be nice if dealerships now made service data like that available thru a VIN.
