A few times over past 6 months we have had the power steering seem to cut out for a minute or so. Usually occurs at lower speeds while turning off a exit, into a parking lot, parallel parking and so on. Only happened half dozen times or so. Usually comes right back for the wife, when happened to me, I turned car off then restarted first thing to get back.

It is a 2000 Merc Mountaineer. Where should I be checking first (aside from fluid level)?

Thanks

start by checking/replacing the serpentine belt. it sound like it's slipping due to contamination or wear. while your at it consider replacing the tensioner. when the wheels are turned it puts extra stress in the p/s pump & belt. that's way it cuts out while turning.

Sounds good. Haven't replaced it since I got it 2 years ago are tensioners are easy to do. Maybe I will finally remember to look for my ac coolant leak when I am under the hood!

Its the wifes car and we are not always home at the same time.

belt looks good, tensioner will be checked with my stethoscope soon. I assume you change it from underneath?

power steering res is actually about an inch below min fill line so I will be topping that off. But where would the fluid go???? Does it leak or just need to be topped off every now and then?
