I went and bought some power steering fluid today at checkers(rudest service I've ever had). Anyway, I got home and looked in the '94 explorer book and it said that youhad to have a certain steering fluid manufactured by ford. The question is will the stuff I got work? I purchased pyroil power steering fluid, and the worker at checkers sort of implied that it would work on my eggsplorer. So should I use it or should I go to my local ford dealership and get some ordered?

Chilton manual says to use Type F Auto Trans Fluid or Ford Premium Power Steering Fluid meeting spec ESW-M2C33-F. You should be able to find Type F ATF at any auto parts store or even at some grocery stores in the automotive section.

The stuff you bought will probably be ok, but I would take it back just to get even for the rude service ;)

really? ATF? that's weird.

as long as it meets type f its fine...... ford just wants you to buy their overpriced stuff..... just like motorcraft oil and filters etc.... and ford diff fluid etc.....

my chiltons manual p/n# 8159 for Bronco II/Explorer/Ranger 1983-94 Repair Manual in section 1-56 at the bottom of the page says:

"Power Steering Reservoir"
Fluid Recommendation
Fill the power steering reservoir with a good quality power steering fluid or Auto. Trans. Fluid-Type F.

My 97 says to use Mercon ATF in the owner's manual. Chiltons says Type F for 91-95, Mercon for 96 -97 (my manual only covers thru 97)

The power steering pump is a hydraulic pump just like the pump in an auto trans, so it doesn't seem that weird to me.

i was just surprised. i guess you learn something new every day. :)

do you guy's think it would be ok to use VALVOLINE SYN POWER STEERING FLUID it synthetic appose to the MERCON V in my 97

G'day, vbtruk. Your 97 actually calls for Mercon III in the PS. Mercon V has more friction modifiers and is a "slippier" fluid, although I think it can be used.

I think the Valvoline syn PS fluid will be fine. PS fluid and ATF are very similiar.
