Hey all,

Looking for some advice concerning the power pressure hose in my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport V6. I removed the power stearing pump, but I cannot for the life of me get the nut/valve off the pump where the pressure hose connects to the pump. I've just about stripped the nut, tried WD40. I tried removing the pump. but still cannot get the pressure hose loose. Please help before I loose my mind.

Thanks,
Bryan

There's no way around it, it just takes brute force. It might also help if you put the pump on a vice and use a hammer/mallet to whack at the far end of an open-end wrench -- the "impact" usually does a better job than a constant force. A "flare nut wrench" might also work if you can get it in there.

BTW, dont use a torch to heat it up as doing so will destroy the O-rings and seals.

I believe that the size is 16mm(nut next to swiveling hose), I have had to unbolt that several times on my 99. If you can get away from loosening it, do. Both ends of the pressure hose have teflon seals which are destroyed when they are loosened. Ford does not sell those size of teflon seals, the mechanics use teflon tape. The seals come with the hoses when new.

That connection should be loosened when the pump is on the engine. Good luck,

Dunno if your SOHC is in a diffferent configuration than mine but on my 98's SOHC, it would pretty much be impossible to loosen that nut with the pump still bolted to the engine bracket (which also holds the AC pump)

And pardon that image of a pump I uploaded, that is actually the pump from a Chevy Lumina (it is the only pic I have of a Saginaw TC pump with a high pressure hose on it). My SOHC's high pressure port is opposite of what is pictured -- on the left instead of on the right.

That's true, but the tool is important. I have three sets of metric wrenches, and I believe the short one is what I used. I also don't have a clutch fan, mine is electric.

Yes, it's nice for some things. I noticed my V8 PS pump yesterday, it is different, but uses the same pulley as the SOHC. I like the look of the V8 line, it may not have the same odd seal on it.
