I was out wheelin last night and my explorer died in a 2-3ft deep water hole so I had my buddy pull me out w/a J**P. We couldn't get the thing started up so he towed me home. I opened up the air intake today and water came pouring out and after about an hour or so I got the thing started finally. But we noticed some power steering fluid all over below the pump, this was first noticed right after he pulled me out and we were looking for what was wrong, of course i couldn't start it so didn't know there was anything wrong with the power steering. But when he was towing me back I had no real problems steering, just after I got it started today.

I had the same problem with my ranger. I ran out of gas and had to push it into the gas station. When I got it restarted I noticed a vibration in the steering and fluid all over the pump. I went immediatly to my dealer and was told that by operating the steering with the motor off, I had introduced air into the system. To bled the air out turn the wheel lock to lock about 5-10 times. Be sure to top off the fluid.
Hope that helps!

it worked! before I couldn't go over 25, now it rides fine going 60 and turns! There's still a small problem when I go around corners and hit a bump or something, I'm thinking maybe there's some water in the lines. I'm going to empty them and refill it and hopefully it'll be fixed. Thanks man.

It took 2-3 days before mine was back to 100%. Just keep driving and you should be fine. If you have water in the lines the fluid will look milky.

What is the best way to drain that fluid?

I found out the hard way on my Ranger if you turn the wheel with the engine off, it will spew out fluid all over the place.
I flushed my pump and changed the fluid on my 93. I removed the return line to the pump and capped off the pump fitting, then ran an extension line to a drain bucket. I think it would be best to have a helper but I did it alone. I started it for a second and the fluid pumped through the steering box then out. It comes out fast!!! I ran a few quarts through it and then checked the level. It's messy, but worth it I think.
