I’m hooking up 3rd row power seats in my explorer and have the switch and power seats with harness and module but I’m missing the wire that goes between the switch and module. Does anyone know if this is a separate harness or part of the rear harness on one equipped with these seats? I’ve dug through the parts catalogs online looked at the wiring diagrams and can’t find a part number or what’s missing. Any one tear theirs apart and know what’s under the rear interior quarter to connect these?

Hi there partner sorry to reopen an old post but I was wondering if you added 3rd row power seats to an explorer that did not have them? I’m currently trying to add some to my police interceptor utility and would like some guidance.

For anyone that is considering this here are few notes after trying to get the factory 3rd row working in the piu.

  • There is now factory plug to provide power, bcm and other computer wiring to the 3rd row seat module
  • The factory wiring computer appears to expect that you have a power lift gate and sensors to tell the seat module when it is safe to enable/disable the switch.
  • I tried bypassing some of the above and could get the seats to move into maintenance mode so I could tell the seat module was working but couldn’t get the controls to function
  • So I’m sure with some additional wiring and changes to the BCM I think you could make it work.
So rather than deal with the above and try to source a rear wiring harness I decided to move forward with my own wiring solution. I don’t have a need for the seats to fold flat into the rear, I may do that later once I source a retail Explorer carpet and rear floor, spare and tire cover but right now I have a custom floor made out of the old piu rear cover.

To get the seats folding was the biggest priority. I have 2nd row buckets with the 2nd row console so when the 2nd row and 3rd row are filed they make pretty flat area to load things and so I don’t have a need for the fold flat feature. How ever the fold flat feature could be achieved in the same manner.

I wrote a blog post to summarize how I did this for now. Down the road I hope to get the retail floor and add more switches and connect it with better wiring connectors.

Here is a summary of how I wired in the current switches to fold the seats. With a wiring diagram it’s not hard to do this. I kind of wish I had done this earlier while I sorted out the factory wiring.

You should also know that if you decide to use my method of just tapping into the harness and not using the factory controls you could use any powered 3rd row seat from a Ford Explorer 11-19 or even a Ford Flex since the mounting is the same. And since you are just sending power to the motors you don’t need to worry about computer module compatibility.
