Not sure if this is the best spot to post this thread, so forgive me that this problem doesnt put my explorer out of commission.. but then again as Texas heat picks up and my weak aircondition fails, it might put me out.

So the problem is this. A while back one of my windows stopped working. I wasnt sure what it was and was out of town so I had my sister take it in and she got the motor replaced i believe. The window worked for about a month, then all my windows started acting up.

Currently, if I try and move the windows they either click at me in anger, or they move for a little bit then get stuck. I have noticed that I sometimes have better luck when the radio is off, but not always. I mentioned it to a mechanic when i was getting my brakes fixed and he guessed it was the ?regulator?

I was wondering if anyone knows what this would be. I dont want to spend much on fixing it since its nearing the end of its life. Thanks a lot.

Jeff

The best way to check to see if it is in the motors or not is to take the door apart, find the motor, unplug it, and run wires from a battery booster pack to the motor, if the first time you try it it just makes a noise, switch the polarity and try again, if the motor works good, than its something else

If none of the windows are working its probably not the motors, I know on my second generation X the drivers door has a single piece that contains the buttons for all four doors and the window lock, it might be a good place to start since you can get a replacement fairly cheap from a junk yard and it is fairly easy to change

The gears in the windows in the Explorer are notorious for failing....search the main site and you will find LOTS of info.

hmmm

well i thought it could be the gears, i just found it odd that all the windows failed around the same time. and although I dont know what broken gears would sound like, i dont think that is the problem. I guess I'll just have to open up the door and start testing these things..

maybe this will help

check my post titled power window problem in the 911 section of this board. hope it helps!

I read your post and I'll try checking the voltage soon, i got around to opening the doors up but i cant get to the motor. I guess you have to take off the speaker? I'm waiting for a friend to get back with some tools. i have none. How exactly does the window work? i noticed that there was no grease on that long metal slide thing, so i greased that up and atleast when i can get it to move its smooth now. It was pretty bumpy due to friction. I also learned that my rear left window works perfectly fine, which makes me doubt its the alternator or something, but i dont know.

another thing i wanted to point out is that the windows never stop trying to go upward. i remeber it used to stop making noise once it reached the top. How does the window know it reaches the top? the end of some gear? it acts like it keeps trying to push up even after it gets to the top.
