powerstroke diesel engine

I own a 94 ford explorer. Was wondering if it would be possible to remove the 6 cylinder and replace it with a powerstroke diesel engine?

Sorry to say but nope. Its possible but depending on the amount of money you have to throw at a project like that its probably not worth it. The only thing Explorer you would have left over would probably be parts of the frame and the body. OTherwise you would have to scrap the axles, tranny, transfercase, front coil setup ect... Just because of the weight of that engine and the power and torque it puts out.

prolly wont fit, barely squeezes into a super duty, there was a thread on here not too long ago about putting a 4 cylinder cummins diesel in an explorer, dont know if it was ever done though

No way it's going to fit. I heard that Ford is coming out with a V6 diesel powerstroke.

I've thought about that also and it would be the sh*%! but it would be extremelt expensive if possible, maybe in an expedition.

Ford has announced something about a diesel-electric hybrid version of their Ford Expedition. Some Ford executives are big on diesel engines - and have complained about the regulations put out by California regarding diesel particles (soot) based on worries about cancer (Calif. says diesel engine emissions cause 70% of air pollution caused cancer in Calif.). What is amazing to me is that catalytic converters were put on gasoline engine cars around 1975 and the diesel engine folks successfully lobbied to not put catalytic converters + filters on diesel engines which may not make it onto diesels until around the year 2005 or so for big trucks. At any rate, lighter weight diesel engines are in the plans - question is when will they be available - especially with the US economy slowing down and Ford is cutting production alot.

I also heard a blurb about ford basically taking the powerstroke V-8 and taking off 2 cylenders and sticking it intot he F150/expedition frome and hopefully maybe even the new style explorer. The expeditiona nd the 202+ explorer will share the 4.6L V-8 so I am sure ford can cram a V-6 powerstorke in.

A diesel swap has been in the back of my mind for a while.
Howabout an IH scout or Nissan small truck diesel? There should be some small enough ones.

I've got the diesel engine sollution!!!!

I just came in from tinkering with my boat when it dawned on me. There are literally hundreds of different small, powerful, diesel engiens from a large number of manufactures for use in boats.

The only thing you have to do to make one work is adapt it to radiator style cooling and put a different style exhaust manifold on it. Oh yes the motor mounts... some fancy welding oughta do the trick.

What do you guys think?

i think I still would rather wait for 2 more years till they release the 6 cyl. version of the powersotoke in the expedition/explorer frame. Do you know how much stuff you would have to change to swap in a diesel?!

As you can see by my signature, I had one for 42,000 miles. I reeeeaaaallly miss her too. But, there is NO way that engine will fit under the hood. Maybe you could spend a few Gs and have it mounted mid engine style.

As for the 'baby' powerstroke, it is true, Ford will be releasing a V6 4.5 litre version for the Expedition/F-150 platform for '03/'04. I have a feeling that engine would not fit in a Explorer either. The problem is not so much the length of the block as it is the height. The baby version will be based off the G-2 powerstroke (generation two). The G-2 will be a 6.0 litre and crank somewhere around 350+ HP, the 4.5 is slated to pound out 275-300 HP and roughly same torque. All said, when they release it, I will wait 2-3 years of production (b/c they are using camless technology on these badA$$es) and will either get an F-150 SuperCrew or Expedtion with it, Manual tranny of course!

Considering that it BARELY fits in the 94-97 full size truck, I doubt it. Not to mention that it weighs something like 1200 lbs. And like somebody else stated, you have to figure out what to do about axles, t case, tranny, front suspension, where to sit, etc. There has been mention over at www.ford-diesel.com about Ford offering a diesel in the Explorer in a few years, though. Might be worth waiting for.
