Line output converter on mach system

ok i know someone is going to tell me to search but i tried to get a straight forward answer but nothing so, here is my case.

I have a 2000 limited explorer, mach audio system (six disc changer/8 inch sub) i took out the sub and was going to put in an aftermarket one aswell as a new amp. WELL i have been trying to find out what is holding me back, checking voltages on everything with a multimeter, double checking wiring etc. i finally limited it to the line output converter or the signal itself. after this i hooked up the rca cables to a rca jack on my brothers cd player in his car and my sub in my car worked fine. SO i want to know am i retarded for trying to splice the signal wires from the head unit to the amplifier (167,168), should i have spliced after the amp? the wires from the head unit are pretty small (i striped them with a 22 gauge wire stripper) and i checked the voltage between them and it read somewhere slightly over five volts. i didn't know what was up and i didn't want to splice into the door speakers because cobrajeff informed me that the lower frequencies had been already filtered out at the headunit. ALL THIS TO SAY my **** doesn't work and i want to know why....

p.s. i got on aldata and got a wiring diagram to make sure i was doing everything right, it is as follows

PIN Circuit Circuit Function
1 173(DG/VT) Subwoofer High Audio Mute
2 694(BK/LG) Ground
3 - NOT USED
4 - NOT USED
5 - NOT USED
6 797(LG/VT) Power (hot at all times
7 168(RD/BK) Subwoofer high audio (-)
8 167(BN/OG) Subwoofer high audio (+)
9 - NOT USED
10 - NOT USED

pps i plug my stock 8" back in and it worked fine aswell
ppps THANK YOU FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS!!! AND I APOLOGIZE FOR THE LENGTH OF THIS TREAD...

oh and i tried grounding the line output converter and not grounding it, aswell as trying two different kinds of converters (PAC AND RADIOSHACK???)

has anyone used a line output converter on a mach system???

ok so i hooked up my factory sub again and tapped into the wires after the factory amp going to the sub and i got a good signal... SO my NEW question is since i am sending 85watts (info thanks to COBRAJEFF) through my line output converter, into my aftermarket amp is this bad... does this affect the overall output of my aftermarket amp???

thank you to anyone who at least responds to this thread at all

There should be a specification on the line out converter you have that says the max wattage reccomended. As long as the converter is fine, your amp should be too.
