Hi, I have a 96 explorer sport. It is going to be signed over to me (I have been using it for the past two years) at the end of this summer. So, since it will be mine, I will want it in good running order. I was wondering what should be changed/checked before it becomes mine. It has about 150,000 miles, and I want to know what I can expect to need to change out anytime soon, and want the repairs not to be on my bill... and, anything that is done before the end of the summer will be paid for by my dad.

In otherwords, I do not have too much free cash to do repairs, and want everything taken care of before it is mine.

Thanks!:navajo:

Well the obvious things is all the fluids like tranny, transfer case, rear dif, oil. Also make sure the tires are in good condition. Front end parts ball joints, cv shafts.

i have 168,000 on my x and the only things that have been repaired are
1 rear wheel seal
2 upper ball joints
1 idler pulley
1 tensioner pulley
front brake rotors ( warped)
and tires.
I recommend
replacing rotors when doing brakes
replace the serptine belt
and i would change the idler and tensioner pulley just because they are inexpensive.
change the upper ball joints out( ive replace both uppers since 150,000)
replace fuel filter( everyone forgets this)
trans fluid and filter.
Change the diff fluids.
and get to know someone that works at a ford dealer(mechanic or not, at least you can get parts cheaper.)
spark plugs, air filter, O2 sensor( maybe)

If you change the transmission fluid, drop the pan and change the filter. Don't flush it, bad idea on high mileage vehicles. Use the Ford recommended fluid for your transmission year and type.
