First of all HELLO to everyone, I’m a new member today and in need of help!!

I’ve just bought a 1998 xlt; it’s done 76.000 miles with mot/tax for £600.

When driving it home I noticed (when driving) when I took my foot off the accelerator it made a winding noise. It didn’t worry me too much because it was only intermittent.

After 60 miles it then did it all the time.
After 90 miles when I stopped I couldn’t get it in reverse.
Now I can’t get it in to drive unless I flick it to 4x4low and drive round in that.
When I do manage to get it into auto/high4x4 when slowing down it pops out of gear and won’t move.

Apart from that it’s great; there are no noises from engine even when it’s cold.

Any help would be much appreciated, because I’m thinking of taking it to a ford dealer to fix and I know there going abuse me.

Thanks
Richard

Transfer case. If you search for 'Transfer Case Shift Rail' you'll learn more than you ever wanted to. The bad news is that you'll need to rebuild or replace your transfer case, and specifically the bore where the shift rail is located as that gets worn out over time and causes the problem you have. The good news is that a replacement from a 98-01 will bolt right in its place.

Good luck!

Good news, picked a transfer case up for 100 bucks today and it bolted in place with no trouble..and it all works fine now.
This sight is fantastic, thank you all for so much help/info.
