Hey, i am new to this forum and this problem has probably been seen before but i need some help. I am good with cars, but not so great with wiring. Anyway... I was driving home the other day listening to a cd (2000 Eddie Bauer) when the front four speakers just quit. The only thing working now is the subwoofer. Ive taken the h/u out and cannot see any obvious problems with it. Anyone had this problem before? Any advice to help a newbie fix his radio?

Thanks alot

Bryan

Welcome! Someone just had this issue the other day...

Yeah i was searching earlier and came up with only one post... It said that there was a fuse under the steering wheel somewhere near the parking break which i couldnt find. Other than that there are a few wires that are partially severed (that connect to the h/u) which shouldnt cause a failure like that. Im just not really sure if its a short of something else that is causing this problem. There was no popping or anything from the speakers before it happened, they just went out in a split second.

Process of elimination. Find another car, try the sterio, if it works, try the speakers, if they work, its in your explorer. I know in my 2000 XLT theres 2 different fuses for the radio/CD player, and then also atleast 3 more that have something to do with it. Check your owners manual and look over every fuse and anyone that has "cd player/radio/speakers/audio" pull and check.

If it STILL doesnt work, plug your head unit in, and run a short speaker wire from the h/u to a speaker. There might be a broken wire inside your dash grounding everything out, or just a short.

It could be a million things, and thats why electricity sucks, u gotta just keep tryin your options till you find the culprit

Ok i have checked all the fuses i can find, which consist of the ones on the drivers side by the door, and all looks good. Any other fuses i should check? No offence, but why should i check one single speaker when all of them are out.... isnt it more likely that there is a short or a problem from h/u to amp? I am a newb so please be easy on me if i ask a stupid question.....

Thanks

Its easy to check one speaker with 2 wires then a head unit with tons of wires and fuses.
If all looks good with the HU and fuses, move on to the speakers. Test them with a multimeter. If they check out ok, pick up a $5 HU from the junkyard and use that to do a test to see if your old HU is dead.

I worked on a friends s10 and somehow one speaker wire had current going through it and a slice in it, causing the H/U to go haywire and none of the speakers to work, with one turning on once and a while, i couldnt explain why or how, but i replaced the wiring harnesses and speaker wires and everything turned out to work fine

and thats why electricity sucks

I'm now having the EXACT same problem. I picked the car up from having it washed and cleaned. Now the only sound is from the subwoofer. I was hoping that while they were cleaning the inside they hit some combination of buttons that disabled the speakers but so far I haven't been able to get them working.

Please keep us updated when you find out what the cause is.
