I just installed a new front hub and now the truck is "chugging" at 65 and 45 mph. I had the tranny rebuilt about a year ago (upper band). Is there anything the new hub could (or sensors) could be doing to make this chugging happen or am I going to have to go directly to the tranny thread again?

Thank you

ps and for what its worth, the truck was up on jack stands (one side) for five days and it has been cold and snowy in the short time i have been driving it.

Could you further explain the chugging? Is it during a shift, holding a constant speed or when you accelerate from speed? What side wheelbearing did you replace?

i replaced the front passengers side hub.

as far as the chugging, its when i try to maintain a certain speed

Like stumbling? or like it pushes you forward over and over like when a train first starts? Or, like a vibration? You coulda lost a wheel weight taking that wheel on and off, and that will cause a shake at certain (harmonics) speeds.

its like when the engine first starts cuttin out when you run out of gas. but if i keep it right at the right spot on the throttle it feels like a chatter from the torque converter that i had on another truck.

Since you changed the passenger side, did you unplug the MAF sensor at all to access the plugin for the ABS?(as in take the intake tube off for room?)

It's just kind of weird that you are having a problem like that after changing the hub because everything should be the same as before, just a smoother ride.

Do you have a CEL on? If so, go to the auto part store and have them read the code.

Another last thought is did you recently put gas in the car? Last week I couldn't even keep my ex running because of bad gas. Put some fresh fuel in from a different station and some fuel injection cleaner, run it about 2 days and then all the sudden I gained some power back and a smooth idle.

Limited

No on the MAF, and no on the check engine light. last time when i replaced the band on the tranny, the OD light was blinking. Thank God its not now.

I will try the gasoline.

I'm gonna drive it more and report back thanks to all thus far!

the premium gasoline didnt help, but only cuz' i'm sure its not in the engine. probably tranny. thank you to all

How noticable is the "chug?" Could you make a video and upload it? Or email it to me and I will up load it. It would help for us to "be" there and hear it.

We will get this figured out one way or another;)

Alright, now the problem has gotten worse so I can tell a little bit more about it and I think it is the engine (not the transmission).

Now, when I go over 30 mph it just runs crappy, feels like the air fuel mixture is off or somethin'. The more gas I give it, the more it wants to konk out, but it does eventually get going again. Also, recently it has wanted to knok out after startup.

I cleaned the MAF yesterday and I bring it to the shop Monday morn.

Anything you guys could suggest before having to hand it over tomorrow???

Thanks, as always.

Also, the Check engine light has not come on, however I have reset the computer just yesterday.

I looked over the thread about 3 times to make sure this wasn't mentioned and I am suprised I never said anything(or anyone else), but have you tuned it up recently? If not, it sounds like your spark plugs are fouling out under load or your wires/ignition system is going bad. Make sure you change the fuel filter as well. If you do the tuneup yourself, I'd do the spark plugs and fuel filter first, if that fails then do the coil/wires.

Check under the hood and make sure none of the vacuum line have become kinked or cracked around the throttle body and intake. I think the 4.0's have a problem with that. The biggest problem could also be the timing chain is getting ready to let loose because the guides have worn or broken off:(

Otherwise, if you can afford to have your shop mess with it, then that may be your best bet. I really hope it's just a simple tune up and nothing major. Let us know what you find out!

That's what i would do is change all the plugs, check the wires, if needed replace them, try running some fuel injector cleaner through it.

thanks again guys! good info. dropped it off at the shop. I'll let you know what the diagnosis is. hopefully just a tune up

diagnosis

Diagnosis: misfire cylinder # 3 plugs, wires and clean throttle body for $386. I thought they were nuts, so I took it home did the plugs tonight and in the process broke a very weak wire on cylinder # 3 all for less than $100

Thanks again to all of you here. I ll let you know how it fires up tomorrow.

You should also add dielectric grease to the boots and connectors. Its non conductive and is meant to help keep moisture out, but I think it will also help lube the boots when you go to put them on the new plugs.

Another member alluded to putting all new boots on.
