First, a lil bit of back story, in 2008 I was diagnosed with relapsing and remitting multiple sclerosis. At the time I just had some tingeling and numbness in my hands. The disease was taking its toll on my nervous system, until may of this year when i could no longer get out of bed. My neurologist recommended a course of solumedrol. Before the treatment i coulnt move my right leg, foot and toes. The treatment was very successful in getting me up and walking again. Now its time to use it or lose it, so to speak. I have to exercise, and stay active so I dont return to a bedridden state.
My explorer has been sitting in the yard for almost 3 years. Before it was parked with blown head gaskets , I got a decent running "low mileage" motor, with a slight knock, and threw it in. I just forgot to add anti freeze to the water. We were in such a rush to get the thing going, and ,finish for the night. We just didnt know that night it would drop to 20 degrees. So the next day my brother, hopped in unaware the motor was froze, and drove about 15 miles until the hg could take no more. Upon disassembly I find a big chunk out of an exhaust valve, that would explain the knock. Little did i know i wouldnt be able to fix the thing for 3 years. So it has sit with no heads on the short block for 3 years. The cylinders have little surface rust, on the ones that you can see, The pistons that are in the up position, im assuming have good cylinders under them.
my question is.........
Should I fix what i have or go the junk yard route and get a motor w/ warranty for about $175
so far in fixing what i have im looking at $200 in gaskets and headbolts at least. Add for a set of rings, and a bead hone to smooth the cylinders out
it is already lookin cheaper to go the jy route. The motor before it blew, was a lot stronger than its 200,000 mile predacessor. IT would even powerbrake as to where the other one wouldnt. So im pretty sure the short block Was in good shape. so should i take a chance with an unknown mileage/previous owner jy "temp" motor? and then fix what i got? or just fix what i got?
I know there is no correct answer, I am looking for opinions and options. If you have taken the time to read all this, I sure do appreciate it.
