Project X has got a code 85

....And the search continues...

...I went to NAPA today and they did not have the Napa brand part made by CBR... There was one in Colorado and they wanted $65 pl and $10 freight...They would not price match it either...

Then they said they could get me another brand, (Standard), locally and it sells for $54 bucks plus and they would price match it so I said yes...I just went and picked it up...I opened it up at the store and it is the same on AZ sells all the way down to the removed sticker from the side...

...I tested it while I was there and it tested out at 64, just like the one from AZ...

...I am going to go thru a couple other parts stores but I know the price will increase...I will keep updating this until I get it right...:hammer:

...Latest update...

...I broke down and went to Ford...I tested the Motorcraft one and it tested out at 62.8...I don't think the Ohms test results of 30-40 apply to the first gens...The info for the test is also for the second gen's which have a totally different solenoid...

...I have good vacuum going to the SPV, and the power test in/out fine...I traced half way to the other side of the motor and all checks out so far...

...Current Results...

...With the motor running the SPV does not open up and the CEL does come on right away...I need to put some milage on the truck to verify I am still getting a code 85...The only KOEO code I get now is a code 15...All KOER codes have been null except the Boo code's 71,74...

...The next chance I get I am going to pull the panel and test it at the pin...

...I did read on a tech Forum that it may require replacing the computer...:(

How were you clearing the codes? Dr Haynes calles out "Caution Do not disconnect the battery from the vehicle to clear the codes. This will erase stored operating parameters from the KAM (Keep Alive Memory) and cause the engine to run rough for a period of time while the computer relearns the information."

This could be the cause of the 15 code (Read only memory test failed or keep alive memory test failed) you are seeing......but maybe you already knew that since you didn't seem too worried about it......lol.

...You are correct ...This is a common procedure and the computer will relearn within 10 miles of normal driving...;)

...I also have a quick disconnect installed for storage of the vehicle and in case of an offroad emergency...

...The sad thing about all this is the truck does definitely run better since the installation of the new SPV and cannister...Now if I can resolve this fault, I can pass smog...:(

I wonder what would happen if you ran the output state test on this? Put a vacuum pump on the SPV/tubing, enter output state test (see my notes on pulling EEC-IV codes thread if unfamiliar). If the computer can command the SPV to open, you should easily be able to see it open/close. If the SPV responds properly, then there may be some question of when should the PCM command the SPV to open, and is the PCM sending that signal correctly. If the SPV doesn't respond to the output state test, and you are certain all the wiring outside the PCM is intact, then, by process of elimination (usually how one diagnoses a bad PCM), the PCM must be at fault.

Does it run without it and does the fault change other settings for the motor.
PM

....I had read on a tech Forum that the computer will open it at 1500 rpm's...:dunno:

...I have searched diligently for more info on the code 85...In all the Fords I have ever had this problem with, it has been a simple fix...

...When I drive it again I hope to have some more info and at least a code...I hate chasing down used computers...

...PM...It does run without it but, the problem is it is due for it's big smog test...A CEL is a fail..;)

Tbars, I'm uploading the troubleshooting chart and diag. procedures for a 91 Ex 4.0 KOEO Code 85, Cannister Purge Valve circuit. I'll have the url to the PDF in a minute.

it's at 1991-Explorer-CANP.pdf

...Thank you...That should help...:biggthump

If I can get it to upload properly..having some trouble. It's not very big, 204kb, send me your email in a PM and I'll email it to you.

...I sent you an email at 6:30...I will try sending you a pm...;)

...Today's news...

...Good and bad...I no longer have a code 85...:biggthump ..I now have a code 22 - MAP sensor

...I had my buddy hook it up to his high dollar scan tool since my X will not initiate a KOEO right after the codes have been cleared...(For some reason I think it needs to be driven 10 miles or so before it has control of all the values)...

...Anyways, start the truck and CEL came on...Shut off truck and the code 22 pops up on scantool.....I am now reading up on this code before I run out and by a new sensor...
