When trying to locate the cause of engine chirping and slight vibration when my '03 Sport Trac was running, I took the belt off to check each of the pulleys. The idler, tensioner and alternator pulleys are all fine. How should I check the water pump pulley? How much should the fan spin when turned by hand with the belt off? The PS pump pulley has some play in it allowing me to jiggle it back and forth however, causing me to think that it needs replaced. If I am going to replace it, should I go ahead and replace the pump as well even though it hasn't been giving me any problems? I have approx. 140,000 miles on it and I wasn't sure that since it has a press on pulley if that means that the whole thing should be replaced or not. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated!
