I'm trying to plan for the inevitable, my 4.0 ohv in my 93 finally dying, with 350,000 miles, that day is coming.

The explorer is my daily driver so I need it to be a reliable as it has been, as I need it to take me to school/work every day. I think it will be best to buy a Ford reman. motor as opposed to a takeout motor from the junkyard. While it may be just fine, who knows what may have been done to it. With Ford I will have recourse if there is a problem with the motor.

Ford gave me the estimate of $2200 for a 4.0 ohv engine, and around $1200-$1300.

I have taken the motor out of my Jeep...which is a thousand times simpler because of all the crap the X has in the engine compartment, but how hard is it remove a motor from an explorer and replace it with a new one? With some patience and careful labeling ,is it a job that can be managed?

Any input would be appreciated.

i would look into jasper engines they are very good.

I had mine done a few years ago. A remanufactured motor was from NAPA. Actually from Capitol City Rebuiders, owned by a local Ford dealership $1800 for the block with heads. A local garage swaped in the motor $550 labor. I also did the waterpump and new radiator, hoses, plugs and wires. Make sure you get a minimum 3-year 36,000-mile warranty. Jasper was about $1000 more for the block.

I will give the napa in town a try tomorrow. $1200 for the labor by Ford is way to high.

Thanks for the replies
