- 94 XLT 4X4
Lately my 94 XLT 4X4 has been pulling to the right when turned to the right hard. The wheel will not turn back as it normally has done so for the past 100k I have owned the truck. If I let go of the wheel, it will literally pull me into a circle. Today I again had this happen, but it was the worse yet. Was doing about 45mph coming into a right hand 90 deg turn on a hwy, the wheel wanted to pull right into the ditch so I cranked it hard to the left. Well I must have cranked it a little too hard to the left becuase my truck went into the opposite lane and nearly into the ditch. When I did this it felt like I had cracked it over center of something and then was somewhat normal steering again. Meanwhile, the entire front end is shaking like a wheel just fell off or a tie rod broke (it didnt).
I pulled the truck to the shoulder, get out and examine while my GF is turning the wheel. Nothing seems to be out of whack, evertyhing turns fine and is connected. Last week I put a new right wheel bearing and seal in the front wheel hoping this would have cured the problem, and because it was worn out. However this didn't solve my problem just yet. This problem also only occurs when going above 35mph to the right only.
I'm thinking this is a tie rod end, steering linkage, or steering box problem (duh..) But not exactly sure which one just yet and was wondering if anyone has had similar problems. Would a worn out steering box cause this, perhaps a gear sticking due to a metal chunk/chip? I plan on checking to see if anything is loose in the morning, nothing was when I replaced the wheel bearing last week and I'm curious if I missed something or it got worse.
I took it for a ride tonight with my dad and try to simulate the problem, couldnt do it. No matter how hard I tried, it wouldnt happen. My GF says she wont get back in the truck until its fixed and we're supposed to take it up north tomorrow!
Also, for a run down on my truck...
All ball joints are Ford, 40k on them
Manual Warn hubs,
Stock tie rod ends, (I believe, at least I've never replaced them in 102K)
Left front wheel bearing 40k???
Right front wheel bearing/seal 300miles (Both are Timken or Ford)
Driveshafts original as far as I know
Radius arm bushings 40kish???
Rotors 80K
Pads 30K
Calipers 80K
All Shocks 30K
Bridgestone Duelers 235/75R15 about 50K
Also, greased all caliper slide pins when put in wheel bearing last week.
Thank you!
