I will be doing some research for buying a used Explorer Sport. It will be several months before I'm ready to buy......(I have to sell my wife's Dodge Quad Cab first).
We are considering getting an Explorer Sport but I need to figure out a few things to get pointed in the right direction in what to look for.
First things I need to try to pin down is:
1. What years are the best mechanically? I'm thinking '02 or '03 since my wife's truck that I'm replacing is an '02, but .......
are the '01s better in any way than the '02 or '03?
2. Are there any problems with the automatic transmission in the '01 - '03? Or is the manual transmission going to be more reliable since the truck will likely have over 75,000 miles?
3. Does the '03 models have seats that are that much better than earlier models?
4. Are there aftermarket chips available to get better fuel economy?
5. What gears did the trucks come with standard? Did Ford offer an option for limited slip and/or lower gears? Would it be worth trying to find one with lower gears, if we want to have the tallest tire that fits comfortably?
6. Any items to watch for that might be problem areas?
