A friend has offered to sell me 2 15" Rockford subs...and a 400 watt per speaker amp, although that kind of power is hard to believe, mabye he means 400 watts total power (cant remember company). I still want to inspect and listen to the merchandise but I was wondering if this is a good deal? >450$ for it all.

Peter,

I think what your friend means is 400 total PEAK power, which is not a good figure to go buy. What matters is the RMS (root mean square) power per channel. Check to see what that number is. That number may determine if the deal is good or not. Powering 2 15" subs is going to take a lot of power to drive sufficiently. The company is also a consideration. If its something cheap, like Profile or something like that, that price is too high for used gear. If its a reputable brand like Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, 450 may just be a tad high for that kind of used gear as long as its good condition. (I am assuming that the subs are enclosed in a box.) 2 15" subs? Thats going to be loud! Hope this helps.

their are plenty of amps that put out 800 watts RMS what model subs are they the punch RFZ that just say punch the XLC's Power DVCs He2 HX2 Punch DVC ect... if the amp is a rockford amp then it is a very good deal make sure the box is about 1.5 to 2.0 cu ft. per side if it is sealed. or Close to 4 ft ported. If it is in a bandpass box and your friend doesn't seem to know a lot about car audio (like at least as much as the salesmen) then don't buy them chances are they are blow. Bandpass boxes make distortion from the subs almost impossible to here easlie blowing subs. That is why stereo shop reccommend then to begginers because they are likey to get your business again when you blow them. Any name brand amp should be good. And if it doesn't have the max power rating on the amp it is probably decent. (Almost every low end company has the amps MAX rating. on the amp with a "cool looking decal" just to sucker in the less knowing.) :) let me know that kind of stuff it is and I can give you some more exact instructions on buying them, believe it or not :)

yeah i would listen to flyingbuttmonkey. he sounds like he knows his stuff. I would also like to know what kind of rockford stuff your buying too.

thanks a lot for all of your advice..but I have decided to pass up the deal and not buy them for a few reasons. One is that, even though I love bass I dont listen to anything "bassier" than metal. mostly I listen to classic rock. I have 4 Kicker Competition 5x7s and they sound really good..perfect for me I have decided. I also need the room in the back of the truck for hauling things etc. It just didnt seem worth it. Thanks anyway
