So I have been looking for something that I can leave at my beach house here off the coast of Washington, you may have seen the beach in the movie McQ with John Wayne, That beach is a state hwy, but sometimes the sand is a bit deep. A guy up the street has a 93 Explorer for 1K with 88 thousand miles and everything works great (needs a tune up) but the push button 4x4 wont do anything. Is it a fuse? Whats the most common problem with this and why it will not work? Replace the whole unit maybe? Help

This is my response to your PM:
Check the switch with a continuity tester just like any other switch. Check the fuse first. I'm not sure if there is a power relay for this circuit. I would suggest that you look at a schematic of this circuit to help you troubleshoot the problem.

Open that little compartment in the rear where that washer fluid reservoir and jack are located. In there, you will find a small aluminum box; that's the 4wd computer, unplug that large bundle of wires from the box. Look for a small white button on that box and press it. There will be a series of flashes from a small red light, according to the number of times the light flashes, it indicates where the problem affecting the 4wd is located...

I have had the same problem 3 or 4 times in my 93 explorer. On the back of the transfercase there is an electronic motor which engages the 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo when asked to do so via the buttons. Every time my 4wd would fail on me, I cleaned the contacts inside the motor itself and eureka it works. I am a fairly new member also, but im sure there is threads on this topic somewhere on this site for a reference.
