I know this is an old subject but everytime I try and find the thread regarding this, I stumble across another interesting topic and never find it. Anyways anybody have tips on correcting pushbutton transfercase problems including 4low. Also the dashlight is on dimmly indicating that it is partly engaged and when off road it feels like it is in 4x4 until you get on a hill and the backwheels start to spin. Another reason I think It might be partly engaged is I can't turn the front axles by hand when I'm parked, which can't be good on pavement for tires vibrations etc. Any info would be great.
Thanks...

What happens when you push the 4x4 button? Anything? Does it click twice and then nothing, or does absolutly nothing happen?

What year is the truck?

Does it have auto hubs?

I have found that 99% of the time the cause of this is the shift motor needs to be rebuilt (basically cleaned) This is not difficult to do, I have rebuilt several of them, including my own last week (finally after 235K miles).

Go here and look under transfer case, shift motor for instructions on how to do this proceedure:

www.therangerstation.com

Also other possible causes:
Fuse out
Bad Auto-hub

THANKS for the info .The truck is 93 LTD and the motor does click a little.
