I ave a '91 explorer with an automatic tranny. I just put in a trans after blowing up my old one and now when the truck is running I can hear a change in the engine when I shift it into gear:confused: but it won't go anywhere.:( I really need help. The truck has been out of comission for almost 2 months now. I know all the plugs and hoses are pluged in but can't figure out what is wrong.

Please help I need this thing going soon.

Thanks:salute:

bummer... i was going to say recheck your plug ins...what year tranny did you put in your 91 ??? did you have your battery disconnected...i know, stupid questions, lol...but i read up on it for ya in the meantime...;)

I rechecked all the connections and they are all plugged in. I didn't disconect the battery but I don't think that would make much of a difference. The truck runs perfect but the trans wont kick in.

I wish I could figure this out. I think the trans is out of a 92 or 93. I figured it would be the same seen how they are the same Gen. The trans was out of an Eddie though. I am puzzled. I know I can hear a difference in the engine when I shift it but the trans wont kick at all.:(

How many quarts of ATF have you put in? I think our transmissions take somewhere around a dozen or so quarts.

Also, are you sure this transmissoin you just put in is a working transmission? I mean if you got it from say a junk yard, it could be a bad transmission.

I only put in 3 but it is showing over full by one court on the dipstick. I got it out of a theft recovery. It was in the junkyard and the trans is also a rebuilt one. It has the stickers and the date stamp plate on it.

All I know is that it is doing more than my old trans. The input shaft wouldn't move when I moved the out put shaft on my old trans.

Ok cool, put the vehicle in Park and let the vehicle run for 5 minutes or so, then check again how the ATF level is sitting -- cauz the ATF has to be "sucked" into the system (transmission body, torque converter, lines, cooler, etc..).

I let it run for 25 minutes and no change in fluid level. I know there isn't that much in the system cause I also replaced the radiator when I did the trans cause it was leaking. I used the same torque converter that was with the trans. I checked the fluid while it was running and the level didn't drop at all.

it does sound pretty wicked with just the down pipes on it though lol.

If the level isnt going down, then the torque converter is probably empty -- it needs a little bit of fluid (~1qt ?) or else the pump is just sucking air. Where is the transmission level now? Is it pretty much overflowing out of the fill tube?

It is like an inch or so over the hatch marks.

So I need to take the trans down and fill the torque converter up?

did you fill it up before you installed it?

If not yes.

Ideally you should .. but since this is hardly an ideal world, fill it up with two more quarts or so and see if you cant force it to suck. If the fluid reaches near the top of the fill tube before that 2 quarts is in, then stop filling and start the engine.

Damn I hate automatics. Why couldn't they have made them all 5spd's lol. I have spent all week working on it at my friends house lol. Well I guess that is the only thing left to try.

I know there was a lil bit of fluid still in the torque converter but maybe not enough I guess.

So if I fill up the torque converter it should work then?

Ok well I will try that tomorrow. I just don't want to have to go get another tranny pan gasket because I have to drain the tranny to fill the torque converter.

I know this trans is good.:(

If everything else is well with the transmissoin, then technically this should just be a fluid delivery issue - maybe even something cloged.

I putin a new filter. I am gonna try and put in a couple more courtsand see what happens. I just hope this will fix it.

Well I found the problems with the trans. The torque converter was very low on fluid, The torque converter didn't go in all the way so it stripped out and messed up the gear in the bell housing.

So I replaced the bell housing with my old one and I filled the torque converter up as much as I could and installed it all the way on this time and I was able to finally drive it home today.:D I am so stoked so now I can finish it so I can go on the Pismo Beach run.

i was going to message you since we hadn't heard from you in a few days....i am glad you got it running...:D

Moral... seating the TC is critical... look for that 2nd drop in.... otherwise you will likely damage your pump and more than likely cause some flexplate damage. Also add some fluid to the TC before installation.
