pyramid amps?

hey guys, i need some good advice. what do you recommend about PYRAMID amps. has anybody ever used them before? i know their not the worlds best stuff, but are they usuable? their are some on ebay for kinda cheap. thanks everybody

I'll be the first one to say what everyone else is going to say. Save your money and get a better amp. You don't have to go crazy, but at least get an amp that costs over $100. Not that the Pyramid won't work, but you're going to have it in, then want more power, as every one does, and you'll end up getting another amp that will handle more power, and be more reliable. There are a lot of fairly good second tier amp companies out there, but Pyramid isn't really one of them in my opinion. The power "rated" on those amps is usually really exaggerated. Even if you got the smallest Rockford Fosgate or MTX that was way below what's written on a Pyramid, you'd probably still be better off. If you look at some of the specs, they're saying like 240 watts max out of an amp that's 4 inches long. That's smaller than a head unit! What you're really after is the continuous/RMS power, not the peak power when looking at amps.

If you look around enough, you can find a name brand amp for around 100 bucks that will give you a solid 100 watts of power (like Crutchfield closeouts).

I don't think there's one person on this board who said they'd start off really small, only to buy something bigger a few months later, or at least wished they hadn't bought what they bought.

ok, here we go. i used to work for a towing company, well i didnt really work for them, my good friend was related to the owner and we used to hang out there all the time. anyway, we used to go in the junkyard and take off whatever useable parts there were in the junk cars. amps, airhorns, radios and cd players, rims, etc. anyway, in out pile of amps, was a cheesy pyramid, and i was desperate for an amp at the time, i think mine was getting refirbished or i was shopping for a new one, anyway, i plugged in the PYRAMID and it worked quite well. i was impressed that piece of crap that i ripped out of some car bumped like it did. although it did better than i had expected, no i wouldnt recommend you buying one for primary use. i needed a backup and it worked fine and hey, if its for free its for me!!! when it comes to car audio, you get what you pay for, i say spend the extra few bucks and get something decent, something that will last long, sound good and strong, and something youll be proud of. just my $.02.

POS in my opinion

I bought one from a friend for $25 a couple of years ago. It was supposed to put out 240 watts x 2 channels. BS!!! It sucked, the signal quality coming from it sucked, and I couldn't fine tune the gain control for the life of me. I replaced it with a 100 watt x 2 channel Rockford Fosgate amp for $80 new and it sounded 1,000 times better! I suggest spending more money for a better brand amp instead of going cheap and being dissappointed.

thanks guys- the only reason i was interested was because the amp said it could push 400wattsx2 and be stable at two ohms. their also that new MOSFET technolegy. i figured they might actually be worth something. i'll probably stick w/ something i've heard of before.

I think I had that amp, does it say 800 watts on the front of the box? and its purple? If it was then that was the amp I had and it wasnt that bad and pushed my two kickers pretty nicely. But there is no way in hell that amp was 800 watts, I think it might have been about 200x2 bridged. I had it for about nine months and then I upgraded to and 800a2 and 3 Rockford Hx2's. LIke everyone else said save yourself some grief and some money and go for the higher quality amps. ALso if something happens to the higher quality amps, like MTX, Rockford Fosgate, etc.., it is a lot easier to have them serviced than it would be to have the pyramid done.
