Q-Logic 10" Sub Performance Lame?

I am having a difficult time getting bass response from my sub. The sub is Orion's top-of-the-line small enclosure subwoofer, the Orion XTRpro 10d (DVC), which is housed in the 10" Q-Logic custom enclosure for 1991-99 Ford Explorers. Power is supplied through a the rear two channels (bridged mono) of Orion's HCCA 425 amplifier. So I know I am using high quality stuff here, except I can't get very good bass response. IF my subs rubber coated magnet is touching the back of the enclosure would this effect the performance? I am thinking of porting the Q-Logic enclosure, but if I do that then it may hurt the resale value of the enclosure.

Please advise!!!

Thanks,
Jayson

The magnet touching the box is definitely hurt your performance because its not allowing the speaker enough air space to perform to its potential. Another downside is that you cannot make the box larger so that the magnet will not touch the box. The box is made to fit snuggly into the compartment area and if you didn't notice, I believe the box touches most of the surrounding metal around the rear fender so you are left in a tight area.

You might just have to try another woofer.

Don't port the enclosure! There's another thread floating around here that says not to port that Q-Logic enclosure. I'd look at your amp and make sure it's set correctly before you replace the woofer. I'm not familiar with the HCCA amp, but I'd start with the gains. I'm assuming you're using the font two channels of that amp to power your door speakers, right? Does the amp have seperate gains for the front and rear channels? If it does, experiment by turning the front gain down and the rear gain up. It may take a little while to fine tune the sound to get it where you like it. When I first installed my new Xtant amp, I had almost non-existant bass response. By playing with the crossover points, input sensivity adjustments, and fine tuning the gains, I now have phenominal bass from one JL 10. It was like night and day. Good luck!

Hey Jayson,

The Orion amp is super efficient, and you I believe it should easily hit down to 2 ohms bridged (or 1 ohm stereo). Make sure your speaker is wired for 2 ohms total. Also, even if the magnet isn't hitting the back of the box, you do need some space behind the magnet. More than 1.5". Most likely, you'll need a shallower sub. If there's no room for air movement behind the sub, the response will be bad.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to throw in a regular sealed box 10" JL Audio sub, DVC of course, to ensure that it's not a power issue. That way I can narrow my problem down to either lack of power from the amp, or lack of enclosure space in the custom box.

I was looking around and found that most 10" subs are 4.75" or greater! An Infiniti Kappa DVC sub requires 5 15/16" of mounting depth. Jeez Louise!

Yeah i would just go with something that the enclouser says to put in there. And do not port it. It would just make it sound like ass. If your want to have more bass sell it and buy or make a bow for your orion.

Check to see if it is wired 2ohm parallel (wiring one positive to the other positive and one negative to the other negative so each positive is linked together and each negative is linked together… if you need more help I can try to draw it out) if it isn't wired this way do it. Also if your speaker is touching the back then you risk blowing it. Because the voice coils vent should be on the back of the magnent and if they can't cool down enough then they are likly to break/blow. Are you sure that there is enough or not too much air space in the enclosure? Also is it completly sealed? Also I was probably the one warning DO NOT PORT the enclosure, Why because if the box isn't already too small sealed it definatly would be ported, and yes it would destore resale value probably to $0. Q-logic has never been a name that I've come to trust. (shotty designs and material) I would see if the encloure flexes any with the bass response if so make it more rigid. And to would definatly check into a new sub that is shollower, your local shop would probably put one in for a few minutes to see if you like it. (Remeber your local shops probably aren't very respectful so don't TRUST anything they say and don't let them push you into something you don't want!)
