Hi,

I just bought a 2004 Explorer 2 weeks ago and it was the first time time weekend that I used it to haul my boat with it.

When pulling the boat out the water, while in Low 4wd, I noticed that the front differential was not locking both front wheels. I was expecting the front differential locking both wheels while in low 4wd?

What should it be ? locked or acting like an open differential?

By the way, what kind of differential does my truck have as front axle?

No, there are no stock front locking diffs unfortunately. Your truck is performing normally.

Thanks for answering...so was it like this for all explorer year? I tought that my 1998 explorer had both front wheels locked when in low 4wd....

Would you know what kind of differential the front axle is from? I guess it is a Dana, but which one?

Nope, they are not all the same. Explorers used lots of different AWD/4WD systems. Although I am an old school 4WD guy, in today's world, I understand why today's AWD systems are probably better for the masses.

I think your system sounds like it is working normally.
