I have my 1996 ford explorer for sale and to get it out of my yard when its wet i have to put it into 4wd low. Whenever i put it in and start to move, it will make sounds like the front driveshaft is catching on something and is makeing like a jerking motion. I cant figure out what its doing and it turned away a couple of buyers.
Do you have any suggestions of what to check or do to get this to stop?

Bump need help please. It only does it when you turn it doesnt do it when you go straight.

first, why do you need to use 4 lo to move on wet grass, doesn't sound right.

next, when its jerking around while turning, if thats on a surface that has decent traction, thats completely normal, and any 4wd car will do it.

its on a hill and after it rains it gets kinda muddy. my mom doesnt like me tearing up the yard so i put it into 4 wheel low so i dont spin the tires.
Its feels like its catching on something when i turn.

It will have a substantial pop when turning especially in 4x4 low, it's just a nature of the 4x4 system... Not really sure if it's more than normal without hearing/seeing it.

It won't come out with 4x4 high?

I dont have 4x4 high its 4x4 auto. 2wd and 4x4 low.
It probably would come out but I tried it and and it still has a really weird noise.
If i can get a video and post it on here i will try to do that. (might need some help putting it on here though)

There's no such thing at 2wd and 4wd low. The 4 wheel auto is AUTO / 4 HIGH / 4 LOW
You shouldn't have it in any of the manual 4WD settings unless your on snow, ice, or thick mud/sand. The 4WD system will bind up and make all kinds of noise if there is ample traction. You reallly need to be on a slippery surface to use any of the 4WD settings. This information is also in the vehicles owners manual (if you still have it).

Might have a bad axle joint also, the pop and jerk will happen on dry ground with good traction, not mud or wet grass although it will lurch a bit if you crank it all the way, especially if you have a limited slip rear.

And yea,2x4 and 4x4 low? Uhh no,you have that a little mixed up.:D

pm on the video or email me and I will show you how to handle it.

Above my switch to switch it into 4 wheel drive it says 2wd, 4WD AUTO, and 4WD LOW.

Got a few videos of it messing up. If you listen closely you can here it popping and cracking.
(need help putting them up here)

Front U joint on the driveshaft or one of the axle joints are bad.It should never pop like that.:D

I knew there was something wrong with it. My dad thought it was okay too.
Thanks For your patience and help.

I did notice something while watching that, you keep putting into 4WD after you have turned the front wheels. When you put it into 4WD, you should always have front wheels straight.
