question about a 4.0 in a ranger pulling a boat?

I know its not really a explorer question but its a ford question, I need to get something that better on gas mileage, so I was thinking a 4x4 ranger extended cab step side, with the 4.0 v6but the problem is I have to pull a boat that weights about 4000 pounds, and doesnt have trailer brakes on it, and another thing is would I be able to put my 4 wheeler in the bed and still pull the boat..how will it do on big hills? What is the gas milage like on these trucks too?

Couple of questions:
WHICH 4.0L engine? there are two. OHV or SOHC

IN either case the 4.0L MAY be able to pull the load, 4000# is pushing it.
Its the transmission you need to worry about, the truck MUST be equipped to pull a load this heavy. Trans cooler, gage, etc should be installed.

Brakes! Stock brakes are not going to do the trick with a load that heavy, no way no how.
You will need trailer brakes.

Also 4000# is a HEAVY boat, you should not be taking it far if you do tow it with a Ranger.

I tow a 19' Bayliner with my 93 OHV 4.0L and automatic transmission. My truck has been equipped to do this, the boat fully loaded with gear is about #4200 max.

You may also thnk about helper springs and/or adjustable shocks in the back for a load tha theavy...


Can it pull it? Absolutely.
Can it stop it? Not very well, in an emergency situation or a downhill with a red ligth you will want those trailer brakes.

You need to prepare the truck and trailer for this big boat, then you will be okay.

4k with no brakes would be ok if we're talking about a dually, but on a ranger no way. do some searching, you can get trailer brakes fairly reasonable. pulling 4k with no trailer brakes on a Ranger is a really, really, really bad idea.

I pull the boat right now with my 98 explorer with stock brakes, its got the v8, and tow package on it, Im saying at its heavist its gunna be around 4000 pounds full of gas and gear, its a 19 foot celebrity with a 3.7 liter 4 cylinder (a big block 460 cut in half) on a single axle trailer..and a I think 32 gallon fuel tank..Im talking about a newer ranger, not the older ones, I want a edge or something.

The ranger is rated to tow over 5,500 pounds with a 4.0 (SOHC) and automatic, a little over 3,000 with a manual transmission.

I'd say if your only gonna tow that much a couple times a year it'll be fine.
