Getting ready to tackle these two parts on my 97 Mountaineer 5.0 AWD.

I cant see what type of screws hold in the DPFE........are they just phillip head screws?

Also on the Camshaft syncronizer.......do any parts places rent out the alignment tool?

If anyone is in the Austin TX area and can help me put one of these in I can offer $25 for help.

Thanks.

For syncronizer - take a picture of the interior "flag" ans soon as you take the plastic cap off (the actual sensor). Match the position of the rotating flag in report with the window (notch for the sensor) when you install the new one - it's not that critical.
The "outside" part (with the notch) can be rotated before tightening the bottom bolt.
See my pic:

Careful when you extract the syncronizer - in the bottom of it there is a shaft that drives the oil pump. It needs to stay there and connect into the bottom hex. It has a retainer ring, but things can happen.
Without it you will damage the engine:

Th inside of mine is really mangled up and all rusty looking.

You should be able to see the location of the flag base.

The Chinese syncronizer comes with a tool, but when I saw the quality, I decided to return it.

Bandit Customs (my personal Explorer based business) is located in south Austin - you should bring it by!

Thanks to Bandit Customs ( Russell and Kris ) in getting me squared away with this syncronizer. All went well. Gotta get this O2 bank 1 sensor 1 done now.

Ohh and the screws for the DPFE were 7mm but I also used a deep well 9/32 since I didnt have a deep 7mm.

It may help to remove the center console for access to the 02 sensor wiring. You might even find a bonus under there

Here is the 02 sensor harness with console removed

In that picture I pulled a real doozie and cut the carpet completely wrong.

I recommend a large "I" shaped cut, creating 2 flaps which will close nicely under the console.

Thanks for the pic. In that picture is that B1S1 that you are removing?

No, I believe it is b1s2, Sensor one will be further upstream on the pipe.

OK. Gotcha. B1S1 can maybe be removed taking out the wheel flap to access it.

Sensor - yes. Connector - not really. The connector is right under the console (see three of them in pic). If you have a thin arm you can get it from under the truck, but that might involve some child labor laws... :)

I managed to get mine on my 96 with some cursing and contortion of my body. Thank god for skinny *******s like myself.

While I don't have Olive Oyl arms, I don't have Hulk Hogan pythons either. I'll try to get it out without removing the center console first.
