2016 Explorer XLT
I have a 2016 XLT with navigation and it gets updated by installing a new SD card. I'm not all that impressed with the system sometimes and I was wondering how the newer ones operate such as the '21's and newer. Do they still operate using an SD card? Or do they use a different method? Thanks in advance.

You could upgrade to SYNC 3.4 if you want. You would get newer Maps.

Search around for info, there is a lot.

I did the upgrade on my 16 XLT when I had it. It is work, but worth it to have the latest available.

There are no SD cards for 17 and newer I believe.

The 6th gen Explorer and Aviator update the Sync software and maps automatically via WiFi connection. There are no SD cards. Downloading via a USB drive is also still available.

When performing the unsupported update to 3.4 (cyanlabs), be cautious that the storage space available by your APIM may not be enough to handle downloading the new maps (compressed is ~13GB) if it normally relies on an SD card. Does your '16 use SYNC 3 or MFT (2.0)? But as stated by MM07, the '17s+ with sync 3 do not use SD cards and all map updates are downloaded via a USB thumb drive onto the APIM itself.
