What size socket do I use?
1/4 is to small and 3/8 will not fit… to big.

Nope, a 3/8 drive extennsion will fit in there nice. Your's is just full of rust/gunk. Clean it out real well, then tap an extension in with a hammer. I used an impact gun on mine, and twisted the end of the extension in to a nice little pretzel, but the plug came out. So, either use a cheap throw-away extension that you don't mind wrecking, or use a craftsman or snap-on, so they will replace it. Oh, it helps to wire brush the around the plug first, and soak it with PB blaster for a day or two before.

Yea a 3/8" extension would work but I'm a firm believer in using the right tool for the right job. Though I have done it with a 3/8".. If you have a cheap one like mentioned grind the little socket retention nub on it so its smooth.
