Out of all the people here who are constantly replacing their trannies in the 91-94s, how many of you use your explorer for towing?

I dont (replaced is in feb of '03), and mine still died at 120k.

did you have a tranny cooler, stock or otherwise?

stock tranny cooler (eb with tow package)

Lost the first a4ld at 165k miles.. no towing (no external cooler)
Lost the 2nd a4ld at 236k miles (lost water pump, over heated, melted hard parts) no towing.... (had external cooler)
Lost the 3rd Tranny before 300k miles.. (I think it was 280k miles).. Lots of towing (towed 1600 lbs of water + trailer weight 3 times a week... highway and 2 lane twisty/hilly).. Had tranny cooler and external filter.
Lostt 4th tranny at about 310k miles.. not really gone, but had an issue with the valve body (not too bad)... same towing + more off-road driving (e.g. Glamis Sand dunes).. Decided to NOT replace the a4ld with another one...

Currently have a 7004r in the truck... almost done... All that is left is 1 cooler line, finish installing the shifter (mounting it to the floor), and the electrical line to turn off the TCC, reverse light wire and the neutral safety switch.

Oh yea.. I have to "tune" the TV cable yet..

We towed a 5000Lb boat regularly for the first 10+years of owning the explorer, and the reason we lost the trany at 60k was because of an improperly installed trany after the flywheel cracked, That was 7 years ago. We just lost the trany again after 100k of a lot of towing, including taking that 5000lb boat from Sacramento to Lake Havasu AZ in the middle of august, and a lot of daily driving abuse.

Considering how hard we were on the Explorer we were quite happy with the amount of miles we got on the trany.

Its a 1992 XLT 4x4 with Factory tow package. Only modification is Load leveling coil springs on the rear shocks (that suck now that there is no weight on them)

My X was used to tow a 5x8 cargo trailer from AZ to CO for several years. This was before I bought it from my parents and it still had the stock 3.23 gears. After I bought it it was used hard for 3 more years and the tranny finally gave up the ghost at 201,200 miles. It has an external cooler and was maintained regularly.

hmm sounds good. so its really luck of the draw....

my tranny has 130 000 miles on it and is perfect ( touch wood...knock knock )
also has tow package w/ external cooler
