i'm not too familiar with the zex kit. anyway, my wife wants an explorer that she can drive (ie. automatic transmission). anyway, if we get one, i was thinking nitrous would be a nice little power adder;) . so my question is, how do you prevent it from spraying during shifts? i know that if i put it on my manual trans explorer, it would shut off when i shift because it only sprays at WOT. but what about an auto?

I have the throttle activation wire from the kit run through a pushbutton in the cab so I can release the button during shifts. The offtheshelf kit doesn't really have a provision for this. However, if your tranny shifts fast enough, it isn't really a problem. It's only if your tranny takes forever to shift (and they usually shift fairly well at WOT) that it's bad to spray on the shift.

i currently just let mine fog away while the tranny hunts for a gear.:p not to bad, though. i have the B&M electronic shift programmer, and always have it in "firm" mode. havnt rigged up a momentary off switch, cuz im not gonna have mine much longer. im only runnin' a 75 shot, so with the firmer shift i should be ok.

Is your transmission a 5 speed? If not, do they make a programer for the 5 speed auto? Can you really tell it shifts firmer and was it worth the money? Thanks.

computer chips and reprogramming change the shift points, not the firmness.

Shift kits (internal and external) change the shift firmness, not the shift points.

Confused? Hehe. I currently have the stock tranny programming but I have 2 shift kits, a hardware one in the tranny and an electronic one that I can control. Love 'em both.

well, when i said programmer, i didnt realy mean programmer. its just the little $45 B&M "electronic shift kit". just wires inline to your tranny, and its the same one Alec has... got mine from www.summitracing.com and i have no idea if it works on the 5R5555RE55R or whatever that 5-auto tranny is.

5R55E. since it's basically the same unit as the 4R55E, but with some updates and different computer programming; the shift improver should work. You just need to make sure you tap into the correct wires.
