I have a quick question for any member here that lives in California, I was wondering if any of you own a First Generation Explorer that you drive on the regular basis that has a 5.0 Swap, How is the hassle with the police? I was also wondering if you swapped in a 5.0 from a Mustang or from a Explorer cause I'm at the dilemma that I don't know how much attention I will be getting and if it is worth spending the extra money and getting a rarer Explorer engine since Mustang engines are vast here and if it's better just to BAR it like much of the Import Crowd to avoid the hassle. If you could answer these questions it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would not worry about the cops as much as I would worry about getting the vehical smogged. If I am correct they do a under the hood check when you smog, so if the engine if different than specs than they are going to have a problem and it wont fly with them. That is if I am correct, I used to live in cali and I know they dont like hondas converted with different size engines, so it leads me to belive that it would be the same with other vehicals. I know a couple other guys will have imput on this. Moved from Nor Cal 1 1/2 years ago, last smogged a car in 2004, I sold it and now only have a 1971 Nova, and as we all know, NO SMOG REQUIRED!!!! So I am out of the loop on smog.

Yea I don't really care much for the smog as I have a cousin that owns a smog check shop and he is willing to pass to forge in order for me to pass he did it this year and I'm sure he'll do it again but i don't know I was worried that cops would recognize the tone of the V8 and pull me over... But then again the truck will no longer be daily driven and will only be used on weekends so i think the like hood of being pulled over is very low... And yea I know how the honda thing goes i have few friends with the CR-V motor in their cars worried of getting pulled over..

I THINK...so don't quote me, but as long as the 5.0 has all the emissions stuff and from the same year as your truck it could be okay.

I have never lived there nor had to deal with fun-disrupting po-po's so I truly have no idea. I'm only inputting from what I have read in magazines and over the net.

Yea I guess I will have to ask. It truly sucks to live In So Cal due to the police harassment from the cops and the constant worrying about being pulled over.

Man I'll pass on that junk. I got pulled over for the first time in 4 years over Memorial Day weekend (stupid school zone on a highway), so that's as close as I want to be (if at all) to any type of police.

I like to mod my vehicles, nothing extreme, but to be different. So I can't/ won't live in a state that frowns every time you fart outside your truck.

Right now I guarantee my truck wouldn't pass in Cali. My exhaust is dumped before the axle and my intake isn't stock. It still has a cat on it for now.

I do get the the whole protect the environment/ clean air standards, but 1 state out of 50 isn't going to change the world.

You mentioned your cousin that works at a smog shop, in an earlier post. I'd ask him. If he don't know I bet he knows someone that does.

the cops truly suck around here, but if your civil with them and dont drive like a jackass, you have nothing to be afraid of. my trackwidth is 85 inches up front, light rack over the window, no cat, intake, dumped exhaust and ive never had a ticket at all.

Yea it sucks here big time. I was talking to my friend the other day and he was telling me they mostly ignore all the muscle or V8's around my area because generally the motors that are in them come stock unlike the imports that have to swap out and steal motors from other cars, he said i should be good as long as i keep it in the low rpm's.
I did talk to my cousin and he said he could get someone to BAR me either a Mustang or Explorer motor but he said it's just a big hassle to do all the work and that I'm better off just getting something that comes with a 8 in it.
And about the clean air standards... there are plenty of cars out here with straight pipes and all sorts of illegal modifications that are destroying the environment regardless/

Yea I guess it is just about how you drive. Or luck.

Big hassle paperwork wise.... maybe......

Fun factor afterwards..... HELL YEAH!! :burnout:

So the honda motor swap junk is still a big fad out there? I figured they would've graduated to something else by now....

Yea all the paperwork would be just a headache and yes it would be fun i guess ill look into something else maybe F/I?
And yes there still is the big import scene hear in SoCal I've gone to the races out here and as soon as a STOCK Termi comes out all the Honda's bite the dust haha

hmmm I wonder why.... I mean it doesn't matter if the import turns 10k rpm, if you don't have proper displacement, torque, etc.... you just won't win.

Besides the terminator sounds better with full exhaust over a "Fart car"
