1993 ranger xlt 4.0
I am looking to aquire an inexpensive performance gain for my 93 2wd xlt 4.0. I think a modded chip is the way to go, but I am having difficulties finding one. Which chip do you guys recommend and where can I get one?

no point in getting one... it really is unless you have $2000 worth of internal engine upgrades (on a pre-96 motor atleast, OBD-1)

even then it would be more worth your while to swap in a 96-99' 4.0 OHV
(160 hp, and it can be chipped for ~$300 for an extra 10-15 hp)

now you can find chips (i doubt they're even made anymore) that improve performance for OBD-1, but you have to run 93 octane. dont think you want to do that.

if you want power improvments, your cheapest bet would be BBK 66mm throttle body, followed by a Cone filter (KNN, K&N, APEC, shoot JC whitney has one for out trucks)

they are quoting only 6-10 more hp, is that right? Hardly seems worth it?
Basically what you are telling me then is that I am not going to get more than 10-15 more hp without a couple grand invested?

Yep yr exactly right... but more then a couple grand I'm thinking upward 10 grand. You can get that thing cheaper (i bought mine for $190 from summitracing.com)

shoot, look for a used one. i mean its gonna give ya more power, but the next week you are going to want more.

Nothing will get that v6 to move any faster then swapped in v8 haha hate to sound like a cliché but I've tried hard to make my v6 quick. It just doesn’t happen, no matter how much money you throw at it.

Basically, you can spend 3-10k on swapping in a 302 from a wrecked v8 explorer (which would be really cool, OBD-2 and gt-40 heads... the list goes on for the benefits of that one)

or you can spend 3-10k for ported/polished heads and intake, a block over bore, some borla headers, 24lb injectors, a 422 or 410 comp cam... blah blah blah and still only have as much power as a STOCK v8

Maximum Violence has TONS of crap done, and still is only pumping out ~200 hp... hes got a super charger and all kinds of crap

Once my v6 busts (which it will take a time, I mean these things are reliable and down right last forever) I’m probably going to be thinking about a 302. It’s just more practical. More power for the money, and down right SATISFYING

hmmm, that sucks!
I remember seeing a pic of a 93 ranger with a 4.0 that had been tricked out so bad the guy was actually lifting the front end off the ground on take off (tubbed and oversize rubber).

my 4.0 is pretty stout as it is (manual states 210hp stock for whatever that is worth). I can usually outrun mustangs of equal vintage stoplight to stoplight. stock honda accords dont stand a chance.
It came with a factory towing package, would that make any difference? I would like to tack on about 50 hp without investing a fortune.... Dreaming I guess....

210 hp? or 210 torque?

mine came with 145 hp stock =(

but most came with 160 hp and 225 ftlbtq

i believe stock 5.0s in explorers come with 210 hp stock, with 275 ftlbtq

I will look in the manual again, but I am pretty sure it says 210 hp. I remember thinking "I doubt that". I will bark the tires in 3rd gear, if that is any sort of indication.

My v6 is pretty stout, I can spin my 35's on dry pavement with stock 3.73 gears. and with 31's I could own a v6 mustang. And almost stay with a mustang gt from the start
