I have a 1996 Eddie Bauer Limited and I was wondering about getting a lift on it. I also have an Air Ride system, and I am not sure if I am going to be able to lift it. I am purchasing 33x11.50 inch tires. I was thinking of only about a 3 inch lift. Any suggestions? Thanks.. -Jack

Do a search on here for Geralds body lift he did on his 99. I think this is going to be the only way to get three "'s without spending alot of money.

Jack, click on "Gerald's Truck" in my signature line to link to my Registry pictures.

I am a little confused; I am not aware of an "Eddie Bauer Limited". Do you have an Eddie Bauer or a Limited? Also, are you looking for a 3" suspension lift, body lift, or combined lift?

Eddie Bauer

Im sorry.. I mean an Eddie Bauer. Any way, I definately want a suspension lift. I also heard that If i get a body lift that I may lose my four-wheel drive, which I need. Basically I just want a slight lift with like 32x11.5 inch tires or something. I just want to make my a car a bit stockier and a bit higher off the ground.

There are dozens (hundreds?) of discussions on the minor torsion twist lift we can do. Use the search feature and search for "torsion twist" and "shackle" and "aad-a-leaf" for starters. You'll find all the info you want. Basically you can do a free 1.5" - 2" torsion twist for your front and lift the rear with either shackles or add-a-leafs, both cost $40 or so. I do not know the effect this would have on an air suspension. Possibly someone who has the air suspension that has done the lift can tell you.

A body lift in itself will not mess up your 4wd.

No lifts are made for our vehicles. You can get a Performance Accessories 2" body lift for '91-'94 Explorers and with some tinkering make it work on yours. You can make a 2" body lift work a heckuva lot easier than a 3" which can present a whole lot of extra problems to make it work. Or, do as I did at first and just do a one inch body lift using hockey pucks for spacers (search "hockey"). They squeak when it rains and you'd have to replace them yearly as they get old, but you can't beat it for the price ($15). The goal for you if you want to hit the trail is to get those running boards high enough to get out of harm's way. You can also get some plate steel and armor plate the bottom of them to help protect them, as I have.

You emailed me asking about my tire size. It is the metric equivalent of a 33x11. Here's the thread link to my installation of the tires:

You should be able to get 32x11.50 tires on, but you may have to be willing to trim off some of the front of the running board molding where it goes into the rear of your front fenderwell. 33x11.50 will require you to do what I did which includes more lift and/or moving the front bumper forward and trimming it also. Go 33's if you can; the extra tire radius works as a lift also and raises the entire vehicle and those running boards up off of the trail more. Every little bit helps.

Welcome to the board.

Gerald,

I have yet another question about your hockey puck lift. Do you just slip them under something and they stay there or can they fall out occasionally? And did it affect your ride any? Thanks!

I drilled 1/2" holes in the middle of them and used them as spacers where the ten body bolts hold the body to the frame. The bolts go through the holes in the middle. That's how all body lifts work; this is just a homemade way of getting a small amount of lift. So no, they won't fall out; the bolts hold them in place just like a big thick washer.

I could determine absolutely no difference in driving characteristics while they were installed. One inch really isn't very much of a lift and didn't affect anything. But every inch helps and I need all I can get to lift those running boards above the trail so it was worth it to me to take the trouble to install them. It also helped me clear the oversize tires I have.

problem with body work

I have a slight problem, I really would like to avoid any cutting into the body work. If I needed to sell the thing, which i hope i dont have to, it would be a lot harder. Anything I do cannot be a permanent change. Would it be possbile to fit 32x11.5's in my fender wells?
