Ok first off I have the Premium system (Dual Media headunit and no sub in the rear)...

1. Is the factory amp still in the same place it's always been? The passenger side rear cargo area?

2. What's the speaker setup with the Premium system (4"midrange, 1"tweeter?)

3. It seems like when I turn the volume up the bass is turned down automatically...am I dreaming or is the for real...cause it sucks.

For now I'm thinking about putting in a small system with no subs. Just 2 sets of components and my Clarion amp I have from my old X. I think I'm selling my sub and amp to someone, but right now I don't wanna put it in the new X. I also don't wanna buy a new headunit. I definately already know that replacing it would greatly increase my SQ...but right now I'm in college and only drive the X when I come home so this system doesn't have to be the greatest. I just want it to play loud and clear...I don't want headaches from bass anymore. Sometimes I would get out of my car and my ears would be ringing...need a little break from that. Also...I'm thinking about mounting the amp under the rear seat...I've heard people objecting to this due to cooling problems but I need a stealth installation. Thanks

Nobody knows what's up with the stock system?

i didnt see this thread.
in 98+ there is no external amp for the doors. the headunit powers the speakers. if you have a sub, then there is a sub amp. i'm 99.995% sure your speaker size is still 6X8.

Ok...I know i still have 6x8's. In the JBL system in my old X there was a 4" woofer and a 1" tweeter in a 6x8 case, just wondering if that's the way it still is or no. Ok so I don't have a stock sub so I have no external amplifier which is a good thing cause i don't wanna fool with bypassing it.

Any ideas on where to hide an amp other than under the rear seat? We'll see what happens. Thanks for your help...oh, any ideas on why it seems like the bass is turned down when the volume is turned up?

mrsteve, I have the same system with similar goals. Door speakers are 6x8. I put Infinity Ref in back and and 61/2 components in front (using adpter plate). I have my amp under the rear seat on floor. No cooling problems but ugly/not stealth. I'm going to mount it right side up under seat about an inch or so from the bottom of the foam. This way it will be mostly hidden and away from feet and will move with the seat when I put it down. Cooling may then be a issue but if I give it more than an inch it will prevent the seat from being flat when its down. Fan...maybe.

I can confirm the stock system bass drops off with increased volume. Seems most notable about 3/4 the way up. The good news is with an external amp you can adjust the gains to give max volume 3/4 the way up the volume scale. This will limit (but not eliminate) the problem.

After christmas I may be looking for an amp and sub. Maybe I'll write back.

Mr Steve, I have (had) the 99 Premium system. This means dual head unit, and also like you no subwoofer in the back. I physically confirmed there was no amp in the rear passenger cargo area. This is consistent with the HU powering the door speakers and the amp powering the sub.

Your bass goes down when turning up the volume because the Ford HU sucks. :)
