I think I have pinpoint the all-the-time rattling sound. It sounds like it is coming from the front timing chain and I think I will be replacing the tensioner only for now to see if that will fix the sound or at least lessen it.

Anyways from reading on the forum, I see that the 00M12 kit comes with lower intake gaskets (I don't need them), the front tensioner, and an oil restrictor or something along the lines of that, right? Do I need the oil restrictor? If so, can I order that separately and get the part number for it? Basically I want to get the kit without the gaskets. Also as a precaution, I am going to replace the rear timing chain tensioner.

Is TascaParts.com the best place to order parts from? I see a lot of different parts store listed in this forum that is why I am asking. And can someone double check the two tensioner part numbers. Am I missing anything?

Right timing chain tensioner 7U3Z6K254A
Left timing chain tensioner 7U3Z6K254B
Oil Restrictor ???

BTW, sorry for posting a lot of question in one thread. I want to avoid paying the $400 dollars that the ford dealership wants to replace the tensioners. Especially if the parts cost less than $100 and I can do it myself in a few hours. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I notice that 2000StreetRod has some part numbers. But is missing the oil restrictor p/n.

00M12 kit cheaper than tensioner

Your part numbers are correct.

I know it seems irrational, but the 00M12 kit PN YL2Z9E473AA that includes the front tensioner PN 7U3Z6K254B is cheaper to purchase than just buying the tensioner.

I used Tousley Ford for my recent purchases.

Local Ford Dealers

Thanks 2000StreetRod for your reply. I am going to get the kit especially since I will get what I am after for cheaper than buying individually.

I called up a couple of ford dealers and they are selling the kit and the rear tensioner for almost double of what Tousley Ford is selling them for. BUT they have them in stock and I can fix them before I have to go to work next week. Has anyone haggle their local dealerships to match Tousley Ford's price or another dealer's price? Is it worth a try? Because come on my local dealership is selling them for way more than the other dealership, Tousley in this case.

Replacing front tensioner.

Hello, and thankyou for everyones input and tech tips, part numbers, etc.
I bought my Explorer new in 2000, it's a 4.0L SOHC model 2wd.

truck has had regular servicing all along, 135k miles wife cranked up a week ago and pop, now running with a good rattle. I listened to it, drove around the block once, rattle quiets some but back at idle sounds like a diesel rattling.

I'm gonna repair it myself if at all possible. thought I would try the front tensioner and order the 00m12 kit, just got a price at retail from dealer for 87.00.

What all do I need to remove to get to the front tensioner??

all help is appreciated.

Probably won't help

If your engine suddenly started sounding like marbles are rattling around inside I doubt the 00M12 kit will help. Your primary (crankshaft to front jackshaft) timing chain tensioner is probably shot or one of the cassette guide assemblies is broken. Since you have to remove the upper intake manifold for the 00M12 kit I suggest that you take a few extra minutes and remove the driver side valve cover and check for a broken guide. If its not broken then your primary tensioner probably is.
