I havent posted on here in a while(since I sold my last Mounty-a '99) and now I'm looking to possibly purchase another. I'm looking at an '04, with the V8. I've been reading a few different websites about the trannys from that year being terrible. The dealer says that they replaced the tranny, brake booster, and torque converter at 60,000 miles. Is this a vehicle that I should be staying away from, or do you think it will be trustworthy? And yes, there is a crack in the back hatch!

04 should be fine, of the 02-05 people say 02 is the worst. With a tranny "replaced" at 60k and a cracked rear panel, you might be able to find a better 3rd gen. Then again that is low-ish mileage so if it's a good price it could be worth it. Good move on the 4.6L also, given the option it'd be foolish to get a 4.0L for various reasons...

02-03 is the tranny worry... so you are safe if its rebuilt with all TSB's accomplished. The rear lift gate cracks are a given through mid 2006... so meh...

4.6 is the way to go... 4.0 is a joke in this platform.. just no balls and will get worse MPG trying to throw the pig around at speed.

we have 182,000 on our Monty and are just having real issues... ^0-70,000 you are just getting broken in..\\

I would be getting it for right around $10000. is that a fair price? Everything I'm seeing in that year /mileage range is going between 10 and 12k.

How does it compare to bluebook? If it's loaded, I'd buy it ;-) Not a bad year and not bad miles. You will have stuff to fix over the years but you will probably love the vehicle like most other people.

In our neck of the woods, $10K might be a bit high; however, given you are in Wisconsin (?), your winters there might dictate higher values for such vehicles. I bought our '04 with 91K, 18 months ago in MO, flawless condition cosmetically and mechanically, as far as was discernible, from a private party for $7K; she was asking $9K. It has proven to be a most worthy vehicle thus far (now 118K). It is our 3rd Explorer, previous being '96 and '99. Both of those were sold in good running condition with 200K on them. imp

I agree- depends on location- you can find similar equip/mileage V8's here for $7-$8k all day. Is this a dealer vehicle?
