I'm looking at maybe rebuilding my OHV engine. I basically need more power to tow a boat. I am looking at selling the Explorer & buying something more for towing, but am realizing I'm not going to get much for my Explorer even in the excellent condition it's in.

So I was thinking about investing the $3-$4K into an engine rebuild. I would not be doing any of the work I'll let a shop do it.

How would I set the engine up for more towing power. I did some searching & found

Bored .30 over
a comp cam(not sure on what)
a set of headers

I'm not sure what else I can get. Better heads, crank, pistons, etc.
Also are there an bolt on oil pans that would increase capacity?
I would need to get all bolt on stuff, I do not want to have to figure anything out & rig things to work if it's not necessary.
I know the 5.0 swap is out there, but I do not want to do that. It's too time consuming, & too much trouble to get everything else to work with it.
Thanks

An oem air intake is always a non performance items....make it breath better and gain up to 10hp like that of course go with the 3 angles valves jobs, ports the heads at the same time and maybe milled, better headers, better spark plugs and wires,Total seal piston rings and if money is still available a Hypertech management system. For the cam if you change it the origininal computer wont use the better performance of this cam and maybe make it worse so buy a cam only if you get a new management system

ok thanks, that doesn't really help me though I know that.
There's not a whole lot of engine management with a 94 X.
I'm looking for specific bolt on items a shop can just install without issue if I buy them & give them the parts. There are no real engine builders here that know much about an 4L OHV for performance.
The only thing I'm getting from them in a bore.30 over, port match the intakes, & get headers & cam.

Bump

Listen OHV is not made for performance its an European design engine made first by Ford of Cologne in Europe. European think about durability and not performance in trucks. Even in the basic of the engine most internal part are BASIC parts and the design of the engine is thinkerd about durability. Yoiu said 3-4k on rebuilding only for an overbore...you will only loose performance because of less compession and without the engine management the injection system wont be able to compensate.
In fact you are trying to rebuild a performance engine thinking the same way an Honda civic guy would do.
Before telling that no one here is not able to rebuild engines en inform you go instruct yourself on engine basis and how it works dude.

Have fun

I think you took that wrong, I was referring to local FL engine builders, not the board.

I know it's not a performance engine, Simply looking at options to rebuild it for more towing power. That is all. I know the history of the engine. I have had a few of them in other Ford's. It would be easier then buying a new truck just to tow with.
