Well, I must say, welcome to the site! Here, most any explorer question can be answered! As for your question, to my knowledge, there are two cats there. Maybe a set of nice plugs and wires could help smooth out the motor.

I second Pete's welcome.
The most bang for the buck is a set of headers.
If you go to the Explorer Sport Truck forum, you can find information on street trucks there too.

Ditto..

Headers yeah!!! Get that sound...you know that.....sound!!
Welcome Tony. If your interested in just a inexpensive set of headers check with Summit Racing they have a set of Pacesetter headers at a decent price.

Good Luck!

I have to disagree... as for bang for the buck. headers are a humungous waste of money. I believe I posted my dyno results somewhere on here.. but my BBK headers only have 4hp. Yup. And that wasnt on a stock motor, as you can see with my mods. The KKM seemed to be my best mod to date... but for real power I would say supercharger... and I am guessing getting your heads ported and polished would free up alot. (Ive only HEARD that that is the biggest restriction in the 4.0, I havent acually seen the dyno results)

Nick,

What kind of heads do you have and where did you get them?

They are stock ford heads from a 99 explorer. I purchased them from someone who had purchased them from Vanir.

Did they bolt right up? Any problems?
What would you have done differently?
Where are your dyno results posted?

 O.K. I think i'm done? LOL!

Hey ya. they are a direct bolt on. they are basicly the same... but it just increased the compression by 1 point. the only thing I would have done diffrently is take detailed pictures of the engine bay so I knew where all the hoses went... and... I would have made sure I didnt lose any bolts. :) Also, I would have ported and polished my new heads (It was the original plan, but when I got them in, I got so excited I forgot to do it. :) ) Anyways. My truck puts out about 141hp at the rear wheels with my current mods, except for the superchip.

Excellent!
Thank you for the info.
