I just had T.C. work done on my 96. The whole trans was rebuilt last august and the guy that did the work is doing it again under warranty. Well, it's all back together and running fine, but the CEL, and OD lights are on/flashing. The code is some thing to do w/ voltage and shifter selection. I guess it should be a diffent voltage for each shifter position, and it's reading a constant 5.5 volts. Which is close to, but not quite the voltage for OD. He's disconnected the harness a few times, and is having a more electrical savy co-worker look at it today, but does any one have any experience w/ this? I guess it could just be one bad wire in the harness. Could it be any thing inside the trans? Thanx for any help!

Oh, the TC problem was the lock up clutch. He has a guy that builds TC's for him. Apparently the TC guy actually used a TC for the 4.6L engines modified so that it fits onto this trans/engine. Said it'd slightly raise the stall speed. He wanted to do this because I was running 33's and the gears haven't been done yet (that's next month). I'll try and get more specifics when I get it back.

Post the code

The Digital transmission range sensor must be aligned properly when the transmission is installed.
I am suspicious of using the 4.6L TC

Isn't it pretty hard to mis-align the sensor? I'll get the code asap. You don't think that the TC would cause this, right? We'll see how long it lasts.

I just called the shop. He can't remember the code and droped my X at his buddies shop for more assistance. He's gonna call me back when he gets the code. Thanx again for the quick reply

codes are:
p0708 range sensor check hi input

p0713 trans fluid temp sensor hi input

Check the white plug on the pass side of the trans, it is a PITA to get too. I had a similar issue with my 4r70w as far as the flashing OD and temp sensor code, turned out my white plug was seated, but not seated fully.

I had to remove my carpet and the shifter access panel (I have a floor shifter, in your truck its under the center console = lots of work!) and then remove the plug, check the pins, then plug it back in and press it in fully.

the DTRS is easy to align, it has an arrow on it and any shop who deals with these should also have the alignment tool from Ford for putting it on the "factory" way. I would check your wiring plugs on the trans first, unplug them, make sure the pins are straight and in fully, then clean and re-seat the plugs. Also check the big grey plug that connects the speed sensor, trans harness, and 3 02 sensor harness to the main PCM harness.

Also they must use your 96 DTRS, the 97.5 and 98+ sensors are different.

If they used a later model case and a different DTRS then you gave them with your 96 trans, it will cause issues with the computer.

Problem solved! Thanx for the help. It was at least one of the pins in the multi pin (I think it's 8) connector. Actually the trans shop said it's such a pleasure working on mine w/ the body lift. Every thing is so easy to get to. But yeah, that's all it was, just not seating all the way. Every thing good now. Actually seems even better shifting than before (he did a Trans Go kit the first time, this time an entire new valve body, plus a bit of work on clutch packs while he had it out.

As for the torque converter, it's the back 1/2 of the case from an 4.0 to match my trans, then the guts (more or less) from the one in the 4.6L, and I think (it was a rushed conversation) the front 1/2 of the 4.6 case which is the same has my original. He said it's MAYBE a 125-150 rpm difference. I'll write up a bit if a notice a big enough difference in the coming week of driving.

Thanx again 410!

New problem for any one listening. I may repost this some where else. I have a bama chips sct xcal2. I set my x back to stock while it was at the shop. Now when I go to reinstal Doug's tunes I get an "incorrect vehicle" message. Any ideas?

Big thumbs up for 410, AGAIN !

As for your computer question, I'd post it in the computers sub forum in the Under the Hood Forum... you will get a faster reply there.
