Got a 98 explorer with a 4.0 sohc. Just finished doing all guides and tensioner for timing chains. I noticed when I turn the engine over by hand the rear tensioner gets pushed in then snaps back out. The front one gets pushed in a bit and goes back out as well. I was told this was normal on this engine do to no oil pressure on the tensioners. Is this correct?

Yes you are right. Without oil pressure in the tensioners the cam will jump forward between lobes compressing the tensioner and put the chain slack on the other side.

Now you know why the chain guides get smashed when the tensioner fails.
