96 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD
I own a '96 Ford Explorer XLT with the Control Trac 4WD option. I am currently at maybe 15-16 mpg (guesstimate) at the moment when I have the 2WD option on. I have noticed that when I set the car in the 4WD AUTO option, I get almost virtually the same mileage. My question is: Is it actually safe to drive the truck in 4WD AUTO from now on without having to worry about problems with tires and/or the transfer case? I won't be using the 4WD LOW option either unless I gotta haul some ass some hills...

The 4wd Auto setting will only engage the 4wd if the wheels start to slip or if the computer senses something going on with the wheels/conditions on the road. You shouldn't use 4wd low range unless you are in some mud/sand/snow going really slow or if you get stuck somewhere (ie-offroading or in bad conditions).

Basically, all-in-all... it's ok to use the 4WD AUTO setting without any major worries...
