i looked and wasnt able to find a direct answer to my question..i just bought another 2000 xlt and my door ajar light stays on..i slammed all the doors and still nothing..the light stays on the entire time driving and the interior lights turn off as im pulling away..my question is, if i go to autozone and have them hook up the scanner will it throw a code and tell me which sensor is causing the problem??is there a way to possibly clean it maybe?thanks

nope it won't throw any codes. Lots of posts on this area. Basic check is put your key in "run". Go around opening and closing one door (and tail gate / window) at a time. The entry that doesn't not cause a "bong" (door ajar) light is the culprit. From there, there are various methods... slamming, wd40, disassembly. If all entries don't cause a "bong", then you have a relay problem and not a switch problem.... and / or a light switch problem... try checking the position of your dimmer...:-)

thanks!!hope its not a relay cause im certainly no electrician!!lol..the dimmer is ok..first thing i had checked before..thanks for the help again bud..ill be sure to drink a bud for ya at lunch!!lol

IndecloudzUA....I bet ya a dollor to a donut its the tailgate/batch hatch, or whatever you call it. Mine closes perfectly BUT every now and then the light will be on and all I have do it open/close, not slam, and the light goes off.

ill try that..but i did the bong test but it didnt really point out the door as the light continues to stay on and beep even when all the doors are closed..

My 2000xlt does this, it is the back hatch, if it doesn't get shut all the way it does this. It stays shut O.K. but the light is annoying. The other sign that I noticed is that the crack between the body and the door is bigger on the offending side.

I have to close the hatch harder and the light goes away.

also check to make sure the carpet in the hatch is not holding the door open just a little, that is another problem I have had with an obvious cause.

I am somewhat taken back /confused by the "buzz stays on even with all doors closed". The "buzz" should go off regardless of door open or closed after a few seconds. If it doesn't, then you have a GEM problem. Of course, the light doesn't have that "timing" but has another timing by the battery saver relay when the vehicle is ultimately turned off (30 minutes I think).

I just opened the hatch on my 2000xlt, it does not ding when the hatch is open, is that normal or not? I never noticed it before. But the hatch has been causing the door open light to come on since I got the vehicle.

well got the light to go off but the beeping still occurs..5beeps then a pause then 5 more..its slightly annoying..all the lights come on at ignition however when there are no lights on when it beeps..

on my 96, every port opening including hatch window and hatch door cause the domes to come on and the "warning sound" to alert an "ajar". The warning sound goes away after a few seconds but the "jar" indication stays on along with the dome lights. I do believe this is "typical" as this is the technique / mechanism people use to isolate bad door switches (ie. light stays on, ajar stays lit). Now as for what you are hearing.... I may have caused some confusing with the "bong" as the bong is typically associated with the key in the ignition and driver door open and / or headlights on warnings. The "buzz" is associated with the door ajar ... at least in 96.

yeah...i think we got mixed up on that...and i was able to use that technique to figure out which door was causing the Door Ajar light to be on...i went ahead and wd40'd all of them...but the issue now is that beeping noise...it appears to be something with the airbag sensor's...
