Quiet aftermarker muffler

So back when i bought my explorer i took it to a local place and told them to put on a catback exhaust system that would give the old SOHC some growl. So they put on a Bullet Catback system. I have no complaints about it. BUT. My dad has decided that he likes my explorer so much that he wants to take over the payments for me, but with one catch. He hates my exhaust and claims its too loud. So.... i was wondering what you guys would recomend for something that is about as quiet as a stock exhuast system.

Alternatively, anyone know what a stock muffler would go for?

I think Gibson mufflers are one of the quietest aftermarket mufflers.

Stock muffler would be about $40 and $50 labor to weld it back in

Jeez i didnt think a stock muffler would be so cheap. I might just go that route. Unless anyone knows what a gibon goes for?

gibsons are really expensive. they only sell the cat back system, not just the muffler, and its all stainless steel. youre looking at probably around $400.

Definitley, I wouldn't go with Gibson unless you want stock sounding. My friend was pretty pissed after he had a $400 plus Gibson cat-back on his F-150 and we could not tell a difference from stock, just barely a little burble when he floored it. Another kid and a dual cat-back on his Tundra and if you couldn't see his tips you wouldn't even think he had a cat-back on, thats how quiet they are.

If you want throaty/loud go with Flowmaster.
If you want a high quality go with Magnaflow they sound awsome and exotic.
Another sweet exhaust is CGS Motorsports, sick sound!

IMO, I woundn't go with Borla on the V6, I've heard Borla on 2 sohc V6 and 1 ohv V6 and 1 5.0 and they all sounded ricey with only a growl on take-off. The 5.0 sounded ok, but nothing compared to Magnaflow or Flowmaster.

I would not recommend Gibson if you want a quiet sound. I had a Gibson catback system on my X and took it off the next day.......Way too ricer sounding and loud as hell. Hated it.

Flowmaster 40 single in single out. Ran all the way out the back without a tip. Very quiet.

Whoa, I think they put 1/2 piping for your exhaust Thats about as loud as you'll get w/o going to the 1 chamber Flowmasters. Were you joking about the 40's being quiet? My friends has 40's on his 5.0 Explorer and it will set off car alarms just starting up and driving away will set off anyone he drives past.

Honestly for a decent muffler that is relatively quiet, yet has some performance benefit (and sold by the muffler= relatively inexpensive) I would give a look at the Dynomax; Super-Turbo, or any of the (Walker) Dynomax mufflers. They seem to be a good mix; for the most part they don't sell cat-back systems, are way quieter than a 40 series Flomaster (or Delta for that matter), and don't sound 'ricey'. Check a few sites on costs for the muffler alone. Good luck with your choice.

I put a Gibson stainless catback on my 5.0L tonight and it's quiet. I'm thinking of getting rid of the last set of cats to get more flow and make it a bit louder. The Gibson has a nice mellow sound that's louder than stock but quieter than a Flowmaster. I like how the Gibson sounds on the freeway at cruising speed, as there's no resonance in the cab like I've heard from many Flowmaster systems. I think as the pipes and muffler "wear in" the sound tone will change a bit so I'll wait and see before doing anything else for now.

I have a Gibson Stainless system which i purchased about 2 months ago. You can only tell there is a change in sound under light acceration. Between 1500-2300 RPMS. If you go any higher than that or under hard acceleration it is no different than stock. My Gibson does seem a little louder now than it was when i first installed it but not too much.

Rscotts1 you must have some sensitive ears if you though the Gibson was too loud. You must be able to hear worms dig holes in dirt from 10 feet away. When i floor mine the KKM intake is alot louder than my exhaust.

and the GIbson Stainless is around $400 but you can get an aluminized steel one for alot less.

99explorer, did you eliminate the last set of cats on your truck? I can hear my KKM over my exhaust when I'm accelerating also.

I just saw in the parts counter section of december's issue of street trucks a muffler with adjustible noise control from S.B.D. According to street trucks "at the pull of a knob you can go from quiet to the loud rumble that will make your ride complete"

99explorer5.0, my Gibson was loud enough to set off car alarms...honestly!! It was not the mellow deep tone that I was expecting. It sounded just like a ricer.

I know, seriously, you gotta be deaf to think the 40's are quiet. If anybody wants the most extreme go with the 1 chamber Flowmaster race mufflers, you'll go deaf in a few days or weeks . A friend had them on his 01' Cobra w/ an h-pipe, now I like loudness, but this was insane, the sound pressure hurt your ears it was so loud, but damn did he scare the **** outta ricers when they reved their 4-banger. After a few weeks he sold them and went with an x-pipe and magnaflow system thats sounds incredible.

Anyone on here put 1 chambers on their Ex?

I did not remove any cats i still have all 4 of them on my truck. I can also set off car alarms with mine but like i said it depends on what my RPM's are at. If i use the throttle like i have an egg between my foot and the accelerator and keep my RPM's low you can hear the exhaust. But if you gave it more gas then just tapping it and kept the RPM's above 2000 RPM's it was no louder than stock. The higher the RPM's go the softer the exhaust gets and i can hear my KKM. But this exhaust was exactly what i was looking for ... a little rumble so it actually sounded like i had a v8.

And i didnt really want to get rid of my last set of cats simply because i dont want to risk getting screwed during an inspection with all of these air quality laws and another reason why i purchased the Gibson was because it was a direct bolt on exhaust system and i did not have to micky mouse anything. Everything bolted on perfectly. I have seen some horrific custom work that rattled and was completely horrible. Thats why i went with a direct bolt on system.

I didn't want to start a new thread on it (sorry if I'm barging in Agent51); but what is the consensus on just swapping out mufflers using a quality shop to do the mandrel bends, vrs. a new cat-back system. I really don't want to spend the $349 that truckperformanceparts.com wants for the gibson cat-back, but I want a different muffler/some performance gain.... Any suggestions? By the way, I was wrong when I stated earlier that you couldn't buy the gibson mufflers by themselves, they have them at the website I listed above. Thanks for any inputs.
