I pulled the heads off my 4.0 pushrod engine on a bright sunny Northern California summer day. I performed this in my driveway and left the engine exposed, to continue my top-end O-haul the following day. While I was at work, Murphy struck and sent a freak rainstorm to dump on my engine:eek:  !!

I just have some surface rust (haze texture) on my #6 cylender wall and very minor buildup on the lifters. My question is should I leave it (so long as it's not pitted or likewise) and let the oil clean it out or is there a product availible to polish these back up?? Please advise.

You could probably polish it off weith VERY,VERY fine sandpaper.

Try 1500 grit first. If you see ANY scratches move to 2500. Go slowly and apply next to no pressure. It will take a while, but you'll have less scratches....

If it is just surface rust and has not pitted, spray some WD40 on it and wipe it off. DO NOT sand the cylinder walls as this will affect ring seal. As for the lifters, let them be and let the oil take care of them.

I performed he WD-40 trick and most of the crud came off. There is no pitting, but the is some minor rough texturing. I think the rings should be able to scrub it smooth once I crank up the engine. If I have problems, I'll let a used car dealer worry about it:D :D
