When i hear back from Ford (i hate taking the X to a dealership) I'll let you guys know what happened (if they tell me anything besides "it broke"....) Thanks for the info on cleaning the MAS .
STANN - Did they ever determine the cause of your tranny failure? I am having the exact same symptons with the rpm's dropping in second gear at 3500. Curious if they were able to tell you the cause of the failure and if the rpm drop was related to the failure.
Thanks!
OK... update for me, and anyone. Only at WOT... it shifts into 2nd and catchs the gear around 3500, THEN it drops down even more after the shift to about 3000 and continues to climb like normal.
My transmission went out 2 weeks ago. I've been having this problem for almost a year. Cottman transmissions rebuilt my transmission for $2500, it still drops 500 rpms upon shifting into 2nd.
No totally logical ideas as to what would cause this. I would assume a "flat spot" in the RPM range caused by our fantastic cams that Ford just didnt bother to fix. Or it could be some sort of wear on our cams after a good amount of time, as I've noticed all of our's with this problem are 96's (i dont know if something like that is even possible, but i dont see why not). I am starting to think that any issues with this and the transmission would not be related (hopefully) as even after my new tranny was installed, this RPM drop continued, and I have had this current tranny in for about 8 months with no problems so far....
well i doubt it has anything to do w/ the cam cause these are computer controlled fully....now the a4ld would be affected by a worn cam because it uses a vacum modulator. i just think its a crappy shift profile for the program....sort like its trying to give it a smooth shift.
on a related note.....recently(about 3mo. now) when i let off the gas when its in overdrive and then unlocks to coast....the rpms go from about 1k to 1300 up and down untill the tranny downshifts into 2nd or i bump the gas. any ideas on that one?
Not sure about your problem fordkrazy, is there a jolt when it finally shifts?
Well, I must have jinxed myself by saying that i have had no problems with my tranny yet- this one is about to blow. Every shift i pray that it wont break. Its especially bad when you begin to climb a hill, and the tranny needs to downshift- you give it some gas to get up the hill, and the engine just revs like it's in neutral, then BANG the gears shift with a rather disconcerting clunk, and off you go..... this happens EVERY downshift. And on upshifts, its like the tranny cant make up its mind if it really wants to shift or not, and the gears begin "grinding" or something of the sort, then it finally shifts. Sweet. SO, tomorrow i am recluctantly going to call the dealership (atleast its under warranty) to get this fixed. Ughhhh, here we go again...
well there isnt a jolt......the engine RPM's just cycle up and down when i let off the gas....im thinkin the speed sensor is dirty or something like that. but if anyone has any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.
overdrive turning on and off?? with overdrive off in higher gears, the tranny stays in gear and provides engine braking. maybe you're at a certain speed/rpm, where the tranny keeps going in and out of gear?
no i know its not that cause its not jerking......maybe the TC is locking and unlocking.....but its new....thats why it might be a computer related problem.....i dont really know.
